Radiation-induced enterocolitis: basic and applied science.

We adapted and introduced in our laboratory a simplified animal model of radiation-induced enterocolitis. After a shielding of the parenchymatous organs, our dose-response studies revealed that 20 Gy x-ray radiation resulted in about 20% mortality and reproducible lesions in the terminal ileum and proximal colon. These changes are optimal for pharmacologic studies since they may be decreased or aggravated by drugs. Sucralfate dose-dependently decreased the clinical signs of enterocolitis (e.g., lethargy, diarrhea) as well as the number and area of ileal and colonic erosions and ulcers. The wet weight of the ileum and colon were also decreased by sucralfate. bFGF at the small doses used exerted a beneficial effect only on a few of the parameters of enterocolitis. Thus sucralfate, and maybe bFGF, might decrease the severity and accelerate the healing of radiation-induced enterocolitis.

Nutrition of interstitial lamellae of bone.

Interstitial lamellae of cortical bone found in the shafts of long bones are served by systems of canaliculi shaped like a broom. The handle of the broom is crowded by canaliculi which open into a transverse communication between the longitudinal vascular canals of osteons. The existence of these systems of canaliculi has not been previously recorded. Their presence argues against the widely held view that interstitial lamellae are merely the remains of osteons which have been partially resorbed during remodelling of bone. A fresh look at the development of interstitial lamellae needs be taken.

Form and function of radioulnar articular disc.

1. The human radioulnar articular disc is a shelf extended medially from articular cartilage on carpal facet of radius. 2. Its medial border is embedded in the wedge of vascular connective tissue which contains fine arcuate ligamentous bands joining the disc to the ulna and articular capsule. 3. The ventral and dorsal borders are loosely attached to short ligaments which go from radius to the inner surface of articular capsule. 4. These arrangements permit radius and disc to rotate on ulna freely during pronation and supination.

Transport of fat through jejunal absorptive epithelium in vitro.

The mucosa of excised pieces of jejunum of fasting rats was exposed for 10 min to fresh chyme obtained from other rats which had been digesting either buttered bread or bread alone. The mucosa was then processed for electron microscopy of lipid material. After exposure to fatty chyme, fat globules were scattered throughout the cytoplasm of absorptive epithelial cells, and concentrated in both supranuclear and infranuclear components of the Golgi apparatus. They were also present within lymphatics of the villus. After exposure to both types of chyme, the basal parts of the cells were much elongated through collection of a finely granular deposit of non-lipid material. This collection was probably due to failure of clearance of absorbed material from the cells in the absence of blood flow through the villus.
