[Acute renal insufficiency caused by Plasmodium falciparum malaria in the last period of pregnancy (2 cases) (author's transl)].

A report of 2 cases of acute renal insufficiency in african women, 8 months pregnant and suffering of malignant malaria. In both cases labor has been induced by artificial breaking of the membranes and use of oxytocin. One of the children was still-born and the other died 3 days later. Delivery has been followed by a resumption of the urinary flow, facilitated by high dosages of furosemide. This diuretic drug when associated with hypoprotidic diet, hypercaloric intravenous infusions of glucose hypertonic solutions supplemented with amino-acids gives a good chance of recovery without extra-renal dialysis.

[Incidence of biliary lithiasis in African urban areas (Abidjan): a little known pathology?].

The rarity of cholelithiasis in black Africa is a very classical concept that must be called in question again. With the exception of pigmentary lithiasis frequently found in patients with an homozygous haemoglobinopathy, genetic as well as environmental (particularly food related) factors explain in part the low frequency of cholelithiasis with cholesterol gallstones in Africa. Yet the true incidence of cholelithiasis is too often unappreciated. Before the use of ultrasonography, only symptomatic cholelithiasis were detected, usually by the surgeon (19 cases admitted during a 6 years period in the Internal Medicine Department at Treichville University Hospital, Abidjan). The practice of ultrasonography will ease the detection of asymptomatic cholelithiasis. Since ultrasonography has been set up at Treichville University Hospital, 30 cholelithiasis of which 21 were asymptomatic have been detected during an 8 months period, a high detection level of course for a so-called rare disease.

[Echocardiography and cardiac localizations of rheumatoid polyarthritis in Africans].

A lot of european authors demonstrate that echocardiography is the best examination to objective cardiac localizations in rhumatoïd arthritis (RA). Leleu, in a recent publication thinks that the rarity of systemic localizations during RA in Africans is characteristic. The authors examine the last 15 patients. They never find cardiac involvement and this seems to confirm the clinical impression about 50 previous cases.
