Hemifacial microsomia with an edentulous mandible: forme fruste or a new syndrome?

A patient suffering from hemifacial microsomia with mandibular anodontia on the affected side is described. The various surgical and growth-guidance prosthetic measures employed to influence facial development and to correct deformities present evidence that the problems of such patients, even when severe, may be helped. Proper diagnosis and staging of the contributing elements of care are essential components of the treatment plan.

Hydroxylapatite (H/A) particulate versus cones as post-extraction implants in humans. Parts I & II.

Hydroxylapatite was evaluated in two separate parallel studies in humans as ridge maintenance implant materials. The techniques for the use of each, the methods of analyzing them and the postoperative results were reported and compared. Particulate H/A (20 mesh) served more reliably and predictably than the same material in cone form, when used in alveoli after dental extractions as an immediate grafting material for ridge maintenance in humans.

Adult

Reconstruction of the edentulous mandible with a lower border graft and subperiosteal implant.

A technique is described that is designed to augment the severely atrophied edentulous mandible by the use of a bone or bone-hydroxylapatite filled mesh tray attached to the inferior border. This method permits the intraoral environment to remain unchanged, causing neither a decrease of intermaxillary distance nor placement of graft material on the ridge crest, which would offer a less stable and predictable base for acceptance of a subperiosteal implant. Lower facial length becomes augmented, inferior labial posture is improved, redundant cervical tissue is eliminated, and masticatory function is enhanced.
