Acute pulmonary edema complicating tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.
In summary, we have presented two cases to illustrate the problem of postoperative pulmonary edema following tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Furthermore, we have discussed the difficulty in predicting those patients who will develop this complication. Because of the potential seriousness and unpredictability of acute pulmonary edema following tonsillectomy for chronic obstruction, it is important that medical personnel, including pediatricians caring for patients after tonsillectomy, be able to readily recognize this phenomenon of acute onset of congestive heart failure and treat it rapidly with diuretics, continuous positive airway pressure, and respiratory support as needed.

Esophageal perforation secondary to alkaline battery ingestion.
A 16-month-old infant ingested an alkaline battery, 22 mm x 5 mm, which became entrapped in her esophagus. She was brought to the emergency department with a four-day history of vomiting. After tube thoracostomy, the battery was removed by esophagoscopy. However, she experienced cardiac arrest in the intensive care unit. Post mortem examination revealed exsanguination by perforation of the posterior aspect of the aortic arch as the cause of death. Microscopic examination showed liquefaction necrosis through the mucosa and submucosa of the esophagus into the upper mediastinum and right pleural space. The possible role of the alkaline center of the battery causing perforation is presented.

Enuresis: current concepts.
Incontinence disorders are an important group of problems that clinicians manage in children and adolescents. This paper reviews the physiology of micturition, the epidemiology of enuresis, etiologic concepts of incontinence disorders, a general clinical approach to enuretic patients, laboratory evaluation and general principles of management. Neurological and nephrological concepts of enuresis are emphasized in this discussion.
