Long-chain phenols from the bark of Amphypterygium adstringens.

The hexane extract of the stem bark of Amphypterygium adstringens at a dose of 100 mg/kg subcutaneously exhibited significant hypocholesterolemic effect on 24-h fasted rats, lowering the cholesterol levels by 31%, an effect similar to 15 mg/kg estrone given by the same route. Column chromatography of the active extract allowed the isolation of two mixtures of long chain phenols (Mixture I and Mixture II). According to GC/MS analysis, Mixture I contained five alkyl phenolic acids and Mixture II three alkyl phenolic aldehydes. Neither of the mixtures exhibited significant hypocholesterolemic activity at doses up to 15 mg/kg subcutaneously.

[Late diagnosis of unilateral pulmonary hypoplasia. Report of a case].

A 12 year old female with three to four annual episodes of respiratory tract infections since age 2 months, was admitted to the hospital with the chief complaint of acute bronchitis. During her hospital stay, the diagnosis of left pulmonary hypoplasia was considered, which was lately confirmed by means of respiratory function tests, chest X-ray films, simple and perfusion gammagraphy as well as bronchography. During the 3 years follow-up, her body growth although below the third percentile for Mexican standards, has had normal annual increments (4.5-5.0 cm/year) and in the last eight months she has grown at a rate of 10.5 cm/year, simultaneously with the initial development of her secondary sexual characteristics. During the follow-up she has had only four minor episodes of respiratory tract infections which have been treated exclusively with symptomatic drugs. She is now under a program of pulmonary physiotherapy. It is concluded that throughout the years the right lung has satisfactorily compensated the initial deficit in pulmonary function and thus, is not only the degree of malformation, but also the complications secondary to it, with has a prognostic value for these patients, along with the supportive general medical management implanted.

[Ataxia-telangiectasia with immunodeficiency and malignant lymphoma. Report of two cases (author's transl)].

Two patients with the clinical diagnosis of ataxia-telangectasia are reported. Both had a mixed partial immunodeficiency characterized by selective absence or deficiency of IgA and anergy to cutaneous antigens. During the course of their disease both patients developed a poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma of intraabdominal location. One of the patients died from infectious complications after receiving the first course of chemotherapy, while the second one remains alive under treatment. The high incidence of lymphoreticular neoplasms in early life in these patients with a genetically deficient immune system is commented upon along with the fact that, in spite of that, the pathogenesis of the syndrome remains unknown.
