Fruit and vegetables and ischaemic heart disease: systematic review or misleading meta-analysis?

In a recent meta-analysis published in this journal Law and Morris (1998) sought to quantify the association between fruit and vegetable intake and ischaemic heart disease. They estimated that for six dietary markers of fruit and vegetables the risk of ischaemic heart disease was on average reduced by 15% at the 90th centile of consumption when compared to the 10th centile. In this commentary we will argue that this figure is misleading; and that a more cautious and considered approach should be adopted when reviewing the body of evidence that is available on this issue.

Introduction of automated systems to evaluate touch-pressure, vibration, and thermal cutaneous sensation in man.

Systems for automatic assessment of cutaneous touch-pressure, vibratory, and thermal sensation have been developed. These systems use stimuli which are quantified and reproducible, a two-alternative forced-choice technique, and programmed steps to test, score, and report. If normal responses from series of healthy persons have been measured, percentile values specific for test, site, age, and sex can be determined. Abnormality, as in neurological disease, can then be defined as the response which has a value greater than that of the 95th (or other) percentile. These systems may be used to detect and validate abnormalities of sensation in neurological disease and in persons at risk from new medications or from industrial toxins, and to monitor worsening or improvement of sensation in follow-up of a patient or in evaluation of therapeutic regimens.

Observations on an intranuclear microsporidian in lymphoblasts from farmed Atlantic halibut larvae (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.).

An intranuclear microsporidian was observed in lymphoblasts from the kidney of farmed Atlantic halibut larvae (Hippoglossus hippoglossus). In addition to spores, intranuclear pre-spore stages were observed. Uninucleated stages with a slight thickening of the cell membrane were the most simple developmental stages observed. Multinucleated developmental stages contain electron-lucent vesicles and electron-dense discs. The spores are ovoid and measure 2.9 x 1.2 micron (mean). Sporophorous vesicles, diplokarya and mitochondria were not observed in any of the developmental stages. The developmental stages observed are similar to those of the family Enterocytozoonidae, genus Enterocytozoon. However, there are several differences between the present species and E. bieneusi from enterocytes in man. The relationship to the other species in the genus, E. salmonis can only be determined when all the developmental stages of the species from Atlantic halibut are identified.
