Synovial sarcoma: a new approach to the histological classification and a comparison with malignant mesothelioma. Immunohistochemical study with anti-mesothelial cell serum.

Routine paraffin-embedded sections from synovial sarcomas in 70 patients were stained immunohistochemically with monoclonal anti-cytokeratin antibody and serum against mesothelial cells. Positive reactions occurred in the epithelioid cells of biphasic tumors only. On the ground of the reaction with anti-mesothelial serum a hypothetical scheme of cell differentiation in synovial sarcoma was set up.

Cytogenetics of synovial sarcoma: presentation of ten new cases and review of the literature.

Cytogenetic study of five biphasic and five monophasic synovial sarcomas revealed the specific abnormality t(X;18) (p11;q11) in eight cases and t(X;15;18) (p11;q15;q11) and t(X;7) (q11-12;q32) in one case each. Additional, secondary aberrations were present in eight of these tumors. By combining our data with information on previously published cytogenetically abnormal synovial sarcomas, we were able to evaluate 32 tumor samples from 29 patients. The modal chromosome number was pseudodiploid or near diploid in 26 of the 32 tumors. A t(X;18) was present in 21 of 29 cases (72%). Complex translocations involving chromosomes X and 18 and another autosome were present in five cases, and one displayed a t(5;18). There was no visible rearrangement of chromosome bands Xp11 or 18q11 in only 2 of the 32 synovial sarcomas. Half of the primary tumors (6 of 12) had the X;18-translocation as the sole abnormality. Of the remaining 20 specimens from recurrent or metastatic tumors (in three cases two tumors could be analyzed), only one had t(X;18) as the sole change. The secondary aberrations in cases exhibiting clonal evolution were also generally more extensive in the metastatic and recurrent than in the primary sarcomas (five additional aberrations per case, compared with two). Chromosomes 1 and 12 were the chromosomes most frequently (one fourth of the cases) involved in additional structural changes, but with several different breakpoints. No differences were identified between the karyotypic profiles of monophasic and biphasic synovial sarcomas.

[Microwaves in morphologic examinations: technologic progress or whim?].

Microwave-ovens shorten the time and eliminate or reduce the formaldehyde concentration in the process of tissue-fixation for light- and electron microscopy. These devices can be also applied in dehydration, and in impregnation of tissues with paraffin as well as in staining of paraffin or cryostat cut-slices. The use of microwaves improves results of immunohistochemical and ultracytochemical stainings. The best results are given by precise laboratory microwave-devices, but domestic microwave-ovens can be also used in this procedure.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma: an analysis of 8 cases. Review of the literature.

Eight cases of alveolar soft part carcinoma (ASPS) are presented. The average age of the patients was 28 years. There were 6 women and 2 men. The left sided and right sided tumours were equal in number. Local recurrence was not observed in any of the patient treated, but lung metastases occurred in 6 of them. Three patients died with disease the average 35 months after treatment. Histologically in one case the uniform sheets of cells were observed without alveolar arrangement. The presence of beta glucuronidase (BG), acid phosphatase (AP) and non specific esterase (NE) in tumor cells was seen in one case studied. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural examination confirm the thesis, that ASPS consist a distinct clinico-morphologic entity, the histogenesis of which remains uncertain.

[Morphological and clinical evaluation of non-epithelial and mixed neoplasms of the female reproductive organs. II. Leiomyosarcoma].

Among 12886 malignant neoplasms of female sex organ 34 leiomyosarcoma were found. Average age of suffering women was 50 years. Metrorrhagia and lower abdominal pain were most common symptoms reported. Surgical treatment was supplemented with radiotherapy. Significant impact on prognosis showed: number of mitoses, number of bizarre and giant cells, massive necrosis and hyalinization. Efficient early diagnosis these neoplasms still awaits improvement.

Pleural mesothelioma. Morphological characteristics of 17 cases.

Pleural mesotheliomas are rare tumors. Thus, only few reports are based on a material sufficient for reviewing the whole spectrum of pathomorphological features. This has stimulated this review of morphological characteristics of 17 pleural mesotheliomas.

Adolescent

Mesenchymoma malignum of the buttock.

A case of a soft-tissue tumor of the left gluteal region in a 33-year-old woman is presented. Immunohistochemical study and electron microscopic examination confirmed multidirectional differentiation of the tumor. The patient died 9 months after surgery, despite complementary multimodal therapy. No autopsy was performed.

[Presence of lysozyme and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin in tumors of the fibrous histiocytoma type. Immunohistochemical evaluation of 52 cases].

In 52 cases of fibrohistiocytic sarcoma activity of alfa-1-antichymotripsin (ACT) in tumour cells was found in 47 cases and lysozyme in 16 cases. ACT was found in all types of tumour except angiomatous. Lysozyme was positive only in pleomorphic type, all these cases have also activity of ACT. Investigated enzymes are useful in diagnosis with correlation to others markers used in diagnostic procedure of soft tissue tumours.

[Morphological studies on cellfree induced sarcomas in syrian hamster (author's transl)].

Morphological studies on sarcomas induced in syrian hamsters by cellfree transmission are described. The tumour tissue for the cellfree preparations stemmed from a sarcoma, containing C-particles. Basically, three histological groups have been distinguished: 1. neoplasms of the peripheral nerve-sheath, 2. undifferentiated sarcomas, and 3. liposarcomas. Furthermore, a rhabdomyosarcoma, an angiosarcoma and, in a heterotransfection on rat, an osteosarcoma have been established. The great majority of tumours could be transmitted by cellfree preparations. To this neoplasms belong the undifferentiated histological structure.

[Sarcomas in syrian hamster, induced by an oncorna virus and cellfree transmissible (author's transl)].

1. Application of hamster papova virus to newborns of Syrian hamster has produced some s.c. sarcomas after a 5 to 6 month latency period, by virtue of the strong inducer effect of this papova virus to endogenous (latent) oncorna viruses. 2. Cellfree filtrates from a polymorphorus-cell sarcoma produced in this way, when applied to newborn hamsters of the spontaneously tumour-free hamster line HaP, again lead to sarcoma formation after a latency period of 3--8 months in about 20% of the animals; the same holds for cellfree filtrates of these cellfree induced sarcomas and their transplantation generations. 3. In these tumours C-type oncorna viruses, but no papova virus, could be demonstrated regularly. 4. The hamster specificity of this sarcoma virus is suggested by the complete absence of a tumorigenic effect of the cellfree filtrates from these hamster sarcomas in mice and rats. The preferential induction of hamster sarcomas by sarcoma filtrates, in conjunction with the fact that filtrates from hamster leukoses, indicates a certain difference between hamster leukemia and hamster sarcoma viruses.

[Elimination of a paramyxo-type virus from oncornavirus-producing human cell lines (author's transl)].

A virus of the paramyxo-type was eliminated from cell-free material of human oncornavirus-producing cell lines (PMF). After transmission of this paramyxovirus-free inoculum to a human permanent cell strain (Tu 197/Tr 1) oncornaviruses were permanently formed and no paramyxoviruses could be detected. The paramyxovirus-free, oncornavirus-producing PMF-39 cell line could be established after inoculation of the TU 197/Tr 1 line with cell-free material containing both oncorna- and paramyxovirus diluted 1 to 1000. A second way of elimination of the paramyxovirus was the treatment of cell-free material containing both viruses with antisera against paramyxovirus. In the Tu 197/Tr 1 line inoculated with such material only oncornaviruses were formed. The second paramyxovirus-free oncornavirus-producing cell line was designated PMF 50.

[Study on transplantable, melanin containing hamster papova virusinduced skin tumours in Syrian hamster (author's transl)].

A melanin containing skin tumour of trichoepitheliomatic character, induced by a virus some 40 nm large, is described showing neither infiltrative nor metastasizing growth. The multiple, flat, mostly confluent tumour nodes appear in all parts of the skin, especially in dorsal skin, at the chin, eyes, and ears. The tumours are mostly blue black as a result of hemosiderin and melanin deposits; these pigmentations occur in connective-tissue cells, the tumour cells and the abounding keratinizing cysts. The blastomic character of these tumours, which in part are reminiscent of tricho-epitheliomas, can be demonstrated by transplantation experiments, in which with increasing number of passages are observed a decrease of latent period, disappearance of pigment formation, and increase in histologic de-differentiation.

[A transplantable myeloid hamster leukemia with high peripheral leukocyte counts and C-particles. I. Transplantation experiments, pathogenesis, and electron-microscopic observations (author's transl)].

In this article is reported a generalized leukemia of the myeloproliferative system of golden hamsters capable of cellular transmission. Cellfree transmissions to 83 golden hamsters after a 6-month latency period, have so far yielded the same result in three cases. After cellular transplantation leukocyte counts of 180,000 on the average occured abruptly in the end-phase of the disease. Latencies were between 4 and 10 days. Electronmicroscopically, oncorna-viruses were demonstrated in hamsters inoculated with either the cellular or the cellfree preparation that bear close resemblance to the murine C-particles.
