[Malignant non-Hodgkin-lymphomas on lid, orbita and lacrimal sac (author's transl)].

Two personal observations on malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the eye are presented, i.e., a lymphoplasmocytoid lymphoma (so-called immunocytoma) of the lid and orbita and a case of mixed centroblastic-centrocytic lymphoma of the lacrymal sac. The different histological findings are demonstrated. According to the lymphoma-classification by Lennert (Kiel), both the tumours belong to the group with a low degree of malignancy. No general synptoms could be found in the afflicted patients.

Eye Neoplasms

[Direct ciliary body coagulation as a treatment for various forms of glaucoma (author's transl)].

At the University eye clinic in Mainz a new method was carried out on 40 patients to coagulate the ciliary body whereby this was laid open and directly coagulated. In the post operative stage within the first 4 weeks a further increase of pressure could be observed in 3 cases only. The other patients, who have been observed up to 15 months, did not show any further increase of pressure and are well. This operation method is commendable especially in the cases of hemorhagic and absolute glaucoma.

Aqueous Humor

[Ophthalmologic symptoms of Down's syndrome (author's transl)].

After a short description of the general symptoms of Down's syndrome, the ophthalmologic aspects of the disease are discussed. The study is based on the examination of 1047 mongolian children. The various eye-symptoms were present in different frequencies according to sex and type. The results were compared with those in the literature of the last 100 years and identical as well as highly significant divergent values were found.

Blindness

[Neuroophthalmological diagnosis today (author's transl)].

The standard investigations in neuroophthalmological diagnosis (inspection of the eye for accomodation, determination of visual acuity, perimetry, ophthalmoscopy) are compared with special methods of investigation. Echography and computer tomography in orbital diseases and fluorescence angiography as a differential diagnostic aid in pathological findings in the papilla are dealt with in detail.

Electromyography

Computed tomography or orbital lesions. A cooperative study of 210 cases.

Computed tomography (CT) has given us a new method for examining the orbit and its contents. The technique of examination is described, and the indications for the application of computed tomography in ophthalmology are considered: suspected orbital tumors, unilateral exophthalmos, pareses of the ocular muscles, traumatic lesions and malformations in the region of the orbit. The findings in 210 cases of orbital lesions examined in this study are reported and the differential diagnosis is discussed. Considerable improvement and greater accuracy in diagnosis have been achieved in the field of ophthalmology by using computed tomography. Early tumor visualization is possible without risk or discomfort to the patient.

Abscess

[Enucleation yesterday and today (author's transl)].

From 1963 to 1973 379 eyes were removed surgically. This represents a constant ratio during this eleven year-period of 2.1% of the in-patients and 2.3% of the patients treated surgically. Mostly elderly patients were affected, men more often than women. The ultimate reason for enucleation was uncontrollable pain in most of the cases. The most frequent cause for the loss of the eye were penetrating injuries (31.1%) and intraocular tumors (30.6%). Histology was done in 83.6% of the cases. Amongst 116 eyes enucleated for intraocular tumors or suspicion of tumor-growth no tumor was seen microscopically in seven cases. In 7 out of 118 eyes (5.1%) encleated for glaucoma absolutum a malignant tumor was found.

Adolescent

[Eosinophilic granuloma of the orbit (author's transl)].

A case of a tumor of the upper lid involving the bons in a 6 1/2 year old body is reported. Histology revealed a solitary eosinophilic granuloma. The classification of this systemic disease which almost always shows an orbital manifestation is discussed.

Adolescent

[Contact lenses for children. Indications and results].

If it is necessary to prescribe contact lenses for children, this correction should be made as soon as possible. As a consequence of the development of soft (hydrophile) lenses, the above mentioned group of patients has increased considerably. In any case, a monolateral aphakia as well as a manifest anisometropia should be corrected by a contact lense to avoid amblyopia, heterotropia and loss of stereoscopic vision. Usually soft lenses are well tolerated, so that patients suffering from aphakia as well as hyperopia should always use this type of lense. Nevertheless, the hard lense still has its indication in treating myopia and high astigmatism.

Child

[Results of a-scan echography investigating intraocular tumors (author's transl)].

63 patients suspicious of having intraocular tumors underwent ultrasonic investigations. An A-Scan Unit 7200 MA (Kretztechnik, Zipf/Austria) was used, standardized by the citrated-blood method recommended by Ossoinig. Out of the 63 eyes investigated 45 were enucleated and studied histologically. Here ultrasonic diagnosis of uveal melanoma could be prouved histologically in 14 cases. In 31 cases the ultrasonic method failed to give detailed information about type of tumorous tissue. Here histology revealed 22 melanomas of the uveal tract, 4 retinal dysplasias, 4 retinoblastomas and one case of Coats disease.

Child, Preschool

[Computer tomography in ophthalmology (author's transl)].

The computer-aided tomography system (EMI-Scan) represents a new X-ray method in neuroradiology. Some cases of various space occupying retrobulbar orbit processes are presented, and it is demonstrated that this method is also well suited to the diagnosis of orbit diseases. Physicotechnical basis, technique of examination, the indication for computer tomography and the diagnostic possibilities are described.

Adolescent

[Clinical picture and morphology of orbital rhabdomyosarcomas in children].

The clinical course of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma is described in seven male children. A survey of the literature on the subject is given. Particular attention is paid to certain diagnostic problems of this most frequent orbital malignant primary in childhood. An adequate combination therapy which results in cure in more than half of the patients should be employed provided that an exact morphological diagnosis is made; this still causes often great difficulty. Electron microscopy is of great value in distinguishing this type of tumor from other malignancies, including the so-called reticulosarcoma. In comparison with the case material of other authors, there was a relatively high rate of late deaths in our patients.
