Unstimulated thyroid function indices of Nigerians with secondary amenorrhea.

The unstimulated plasma thyroid indices of triiodothyronine uptake (T(3)U), thyroxine (T(4)), free thyroxine index (FTI), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and prolactin levels were measured in 56 patients who were complaining of secondary amenorrhea, and in 40 control patients. No significant differences were noted in the plasma indices between the two groups. Mean ± standard error plasma prolactin levels in patients with secondary amenorrhea and in the control patients were 21.8 ± 2 ng/mL and 10.5 ng/mL, respectively. Twenty-two (39 percent) patients who were complaining of amenorrhea had hyperprolactinemia and galactorrhea. The thyroid indices of these patients did not differ significantly from the control group.

Amoebic abscess in the cirrhotic liver.

Though amoebic liver abscess and liver cirrhosis occur very commonly in hospital practice in the tropics, they have not to the knowledge of the present authors hitherto been reported to occur simultaneously in the same patient. The patient described here, who had clear-cut clinical and histological features of chronic liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension and ascites, presented somewhat acutely with liver pain and an amoebic liver abscess that contained 'chocolate sauce' on needle aspiration. The amoebic abscess, although, no doubt, superimposed on chronic irreversible cirrhosis, rapidly regressed on metronidazole therapy. The infrequency with which liver abscess and liver cirrhosis coexist cannot be satisfactorily explained. It is probable, however, that extensive scarring in the liver may prevent entamoeba histolytica from thriving.

Tc 99m bone scanning in early detection of rhabdomyosarcoma metastases. A case report.

Employing the Siemens Scintimat II, a skeletal scintigraphy was successfully appled in the early detection, localisation and delineation of bone metastases to the knee from rhabdomyosarcoma of the right pectoral region. However repeated radiographs of the knee continued to be negative. As all other treatment approach of the painful knee: physiotherapy (short wave diathermy) had failed to produce relief, radiotherapy was applied as a last resort; the swelling regressed and the pain disappeared. This was indicative of the positive detection of early rhabdomyosarcoma metastases to be bones as a positive scan is seen in all areas of bone accretion whether malignancy is present or not.

LiF dosimetric studies of cavity displacement effect and reference depths for electron beams.

The total effects of the cavity displacement and the perturbation of the field by the cavity in thimble-chamber measurements of absorbed dose were investigated for electron beams of energy 15, 20, 30, and 39 MeV and for 60CO gamma radiation by LiF dosimeter rods of diameter 1 mm and length 6 mm. The measurements were carried out in a polystyrene phantom at recommended reference depths and at the respective electronic equilibrium depths, for cavities of varying sizes. Owing to the cavity effect, the ratio of absorbed dose of a 5-mm-diameter cavity to that of a point cavity, at the reference depth, was 1.028 for 60Co gamma radiation; this ratio varied from 1.022 at 15 MeV to 1.033 for 39-MeV electrons. Although the cavity effect is present over regions of the depth dose where dose is constant with depth, here it was less dependent on cavity size than when the cavity was positioned at ICRU depths. Both the displacement and perturbation of the radiation field effects are automatically corrected through the experimental arrangement in this work.
