Magnetoelastic coupling in the spin-dimer system TlCuCl3.

Based on high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the magnetostriction we analyze the magnetoelastic coupling of TlCuCl3. We find that the phase boundary between the low-field spin liquid phase and the magnetic-field-induced Néel phase is extremely sensitive to pressure and would change by about +/-185%/GPa depending on the direction of uniaxial pressure. This drastic effect can unambiguously be traced back to the pressure dependencies of the intradimer coupling, whereas changes of the interdimer couplings under pressure play a minor role. The observed strong decrease of the interdimer coupling, when Tl is substituted by K, is therefore not a consequence of chemical pressure.

Field-induced magnetic order and simultaneous lattice deformation in TlCuCl(3).

We report the results of Cu and Cl nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and thermal expansion measurements in magnetic fields in the coupled dimer spin system TlCuCl3. We found that the field-induced antiferromagnetic transition as confirmed by the splitting of NMR lines is slightly discontinuous. The abrupt change of the electric field gradient at the Cl sites, as well as the sizable change of the lattice constants, across the phase boundary indicate that the magnetic order is accompanied by simultaneous lattice deformation.

Sound attenuation study on the bose-Einstein condensation of magnons in TlCuCl3.

We investigate experimentally and theoretically sound attenuation in the quantum spin system TlCuCl3 in magnetic fields at low temperatures. Near the point of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons a sharp peak in the sound attenuation is observed. The peak demonstrates a hysteresis as a function of the magnetic field pointing to a first-order contribution to the transition. The sound damping has a Drude-like form arising as a result of hard-core magnon-magnon collisions. The strength of the coupling between lattice and magnons is estimated from the experimental data. The puzzling relationship between the transition temperature and the concentration of magnons is explained by their "relativistic" dispersion.

Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute magnons in TlCuCl3.

The recent observation [A. Oosawa et al., J. Phys. Condens. Matter 11, 265 (1999)] of the field-induced Neel ordering in the spin-gap magnetic compound TlCuCl3 is interpreted as a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. A Hartree-Fock-type calculation based on this picture is shown to describe the temperature dependence of the magnetization well.
