[Blood titers of the bovine respiratory syncytial virus].
The variations in titre of the bovine respiratory syncytial virus were determined in young calves. As soon as maternal immunity was no longer detectable, the calves were inoculated. Inoculations in animals which were less than four months of age gave rise to only a slight increase in titres. The increases in titre in calves over this age varied markedly.

[Fertility of dairy cattle in Kenya (author's transl)].
The fertility of dairy cattle was studied on thirty-three government farms in Kenya for five years. Most parameters of fertility showed marked differences between the various farms. Some farms showed considerable annual variations, whereas others continued to have good results during all these years and other farms only obtained results far below average. Dairy cattle fertility was fairly satisfactory with an average conception rate of 51 per cent after first inseminations and averaging two inseminations for each conception. However, the disappointing average calving-interval of 413 days was primarily due to the long parturition-to-first-insemination interval of ninety-three days on an average, and on average of 123 days in 1975. The frequency of normal heat- en service intervals (17-25 days) was too low by approximately 50 per cent, which was caused by the inefficiency of oestrus detection.
[Cows which are unable to stand (author's transl)].
The most important features of the previous history and on examination, to which attention should be paid to ensure a correct diagnosis and prognosis in syndromes in which inability to stand is an outstanding symptom, are described.
[Some aspects of veterinary education, viewed in the light of alterations of structure and renewal of programmes (author's transl)].
Attention having been paid to various aspects of the rapid expansion which scientific education has shown during the past few decades, the various structural changes in veterinary education are discussed. A number of methods are suggested, which may help in attaining the objectives.
[Botulism in cattle in a loose housing following the use of litter from a broiler farm (author's transl)].
An outbreak of type C botulism in cattle is reported, which was caused by the fact that litter from a broiler farm, in which a large number of toxic carcases had been present, had been used as a bedding in the cubicles. There is evidence to suggest that there is a relationship with the large number of cases of type C botulism in waterfowl in the Netherlands in recent years.
Acute severe mastitis in cows of the Dutch-Friesian Breed (author's transl).
One hundred cases of severe acute mastitis are reported. Bacteriological examination of the milk was negative in 23% of the cases. E. coli was most frequently found to be the causative organism (23%), followed by St. aureus (19%), C. pyogenes (10%), Str. dysgalactiae (9%), Str. agalactiae (5%) and a number of other pathogenic agents such as atypical streptococci, Str. uberis, haemolytic streptococci, Aerobacter aerogenes, Kl. pneumoniae, a clostridium and P. multocida. In several cases, a tentative diagnosis may be based on the clinical symptoms, which is then found to be correct on bacteriological examination of the milk. The prognosis will vary with the causative organism. Treatment was life-saving in more than 90% of the cases, the milk-producing capacity of the affected quarter being completely preserved in 36% and partly preserved in 27% of the cases.
Determination of quinidine in human serum in the presence of diuretics.
A new method for the determination of quinidine in human serum by fluorometry is described. The interference of triamterene encountered with other methods is greatly reduced, whereas a number of other diuretics do not interfere at all. The specificity is based on quenching of the fluorescence of cinchona alkaloids by chloride ions. The method has good reproducibility and linearity, and gives a recovery of 98%. A serum sample of 0.1 ml is sufficient for the assay. Comparison with two other methods showed that this procedure yields the total amount of cinchona alkaloids present in serum, which makes it extremely useful for routine clinical analysis.
[Comparative studies on the effectiveness of intramammary treatment of clinical mastitis cattle (author's transl)].
To study the effectiveness of intramammary treatment of clinical mastitis in cattle, three different suspensions containing antibiotics for intramammary injection were compared in a field trial in the provinces of Friesland and North Brabant. Milk samples from the clinically abnormal as well as from the clinically normal quarters were examined for pathogenic bacteria and cell counts were made prior to treatment, within one week after treatment and within three weeks after treatment. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by laboratory studies in approximately 90 per cent of the cases in which quarters were abnormal. However, 50 per cent of the clinically normal quarters also showed increased cell counts and/or bacterial infection. Treatment of these quarters should therefore be considered. Apart from regional variations as regards the character of the mastitis and the results of treatment, there were no significant differences between the effects of the three suspensions. Clinical recovery occurred in approximately 90 per cent of the cases, the pathogenic bacteria disappeared in approximately 75 per cent of the cases and the increased cell counts were restored to normal in approximately 60 per cent of the abnormal quarters.
