[Morphologic and cytophotometric indices of the state of the neurons of the spinal cord and spinal cord ganglia following exposure to gravitational stress].

The work presents data on the state of the neurons of the spinal ganglia and the spinal cord of the lumbosacral part in 96 cats subjected to single stresses (10g) and repeated ones (6g). The material was stained with thionin after Nissl. RNA was detected after Einarson. Photometry of the sections was made in MUP.5. Morphological changes were shown to be more pronounced in sensory cells. The method of cytophotometry established the increase by 25% amount of RNA in their cytoplasm after single stresses. Repeated stresses resulted in depletion of RNA. The amount of RNA returned to the initial level within 2 days after single stresses and within 3 days after repeated rotations. The shifts were much less pronounced in motoneurons.

[Human tolerance for high-intensity contact heat exposure of the surface of the skin].

Significant heating of the thermoprotective suit leads to a rapid growth of the temperature of its inner layer which is in contact with the human body. Prediction of the allowable time of high-temperature exposure is important when evaluating safety parameters. This paper presents the results of measuring the time during which the direct contact between cotton and wool clothes and the forearm skin can be tolerated. The results describe the time and amplitude parameters of the maximally allowable heat exposure. They can be used in testing prototypes of the protective equipment and in selecting their thermophysical characteristics as applied to an extreme environment.

[Psychoemotional strain on pilots prior to ejection and its role in adequate performance].

It was demonstrated that with respect to the psychoemotional state real and simulated catapulting events were similar. The time-course variations in the latent period of the motor reaction were obtained. The time interval between the command "Go" and the catapulting event was found to increase significantly in relation to the latent period. This was correlated with the level of psychoemotional strain.

[Resonance frequencies of vibration in rats].

Using piezoelectric transducers, resonance frequencies of different body parts of rats exposed to whole-body vertical vibration were measured. The exposure was as follows: acceleration--8 m/sec2, head--75-80 Hz, chest 225-230 Hz, and abdomen--27-29 Hz. An attempt was made to determine roughly an interspecies (man-rat) coefficient with respect to resonance frequencies which was estimated to be 0.2-0.25.

[Evaluation of the changes in the bone structures of the human axial skeleton in prolonged space flight].

Changes in the mineral content of the left heel bone of the Salyut-6 crewmembers who made 75--184-day flights were measured by direct photon absorptiometry. The postflight results were compared with the predicted rate of bone atrophy. This parameter was derived from the data concerning variations in the mineral content of spongy bones of men and animals exposed to actual and simulated weightlessness for various time intervals. The efficiency of countermeasures against the adverse effect of weightlessness on bones was assessed. It is concluded that crewmembers with a high content of minerals in spongy structures of the axial skeleton and a low basal metabolism should be selected for prolonged space missions.
