Antimicrobial susceptibilities and capsular types of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in children in Mexico City.

As part of the Sistema Regional de Vacunas (SIREVA) initiative, we conducted a surveillance study to determine the relative prevalence of capsular types of Streptococcus pneumoniae and antimicrobial susceptibility of invasive isolates in children less than 5 years old. We collected 220 isolates and found 33 of the 90 known types, with type 23F as the most common followed by types 6A+B, 14, 19F, and 19A. High penicillin resistance was found in 49 strains (22.2%), 31 belonging to type 23F. Twenty-nine (13.1%) were resistant to erythromycin, 95 (43.1%) were resistant to chloramphenicol, and 24 (10.9%) were resistant to cefotaxime. No strains were resistant to vancomycin.

[Role of the WHO and PAHO in relation to national research policies].

This article deals with the main recommendations of the World Health Assembly and the III Special Meeting of Health of the Americas related to research activities in the countries. It explains the principles underlying the Organization's research policy at the world and regional levels, and the means available for supporting this activity in the health field. It also reports on PAHO's recent research promotion and coordination efforts, which included, inter alia, meetings on national research policies (nine at the country and four at the subregional level), a census of research resources in all countries of the Americas, the provision of modest grants for research projects and for the exchange and training of researchers, support the WHO's collaborating centers, the study of the social sciences as a component of research in health, and fellowships.

[Biological features and experimental pathogenicity of Candida strains isolated by hemoculture at the Hospital Infantil de México "Federico Gómez"].

In a period of 15 months (1990-1991) it was carried out 5781 blood cultures in which 180 strains of yeast-like were isolated. 116 of these strains were selected for biochemical classification, cellular and colonial morphology and experimental determination of virulence in mice. Most of the strains were classified as Candida albicans (60%) and the others were C. tropicalis (15.5%); C. guillermondii (10.3%); T. glabrata (6.8%); Rhodotorula rubra (3.4%); Cryptococcus neoformans (2.58%) y C. parapsilosis (0.86%). C. albicans ATCC14053, y C. tropicalis ATCC14056 and T. glabrata ATCC15545 were employed as controls. The virulence test was performed using mice of 20-30 gr (4-6 weeks age) by intravenous injection in caudal vein with 0.5 ml of different suspension from 10(5) to 10(9) CFU/ml. Observation time was 10 days. Target organ was kidney by macro and microscopic observation of micro-abscess death. LD50 was estimated by the Reed-muench method. Intraspecific and interspecific differences were observed. It is more valid if we take into account that the experiment was done in homogenous population of host without risk factor which influences the human population in hospitals. Experimental virulence was compared with the evolution of diseases in the human host of which the strain was isolated.
