Molecular theory of irreversibility.

A generalization of the Gibbs entropy postulate is proposed based on the Bogolyubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy of equations as the nonequilibrium entropy for a system of N interacting particles. This entropy satisfies the basic principles of thermodynamics in the sense that it reaches its maximum at equilibrium and is coherent with the second law. By using a generalization of the Liouville equation describing the evolution of the distribution vector, it is demonstrated that the entropy production is a non-negative quantity. Moreover, following the procedure of nonequilibrium thermodynamics a transport matrix is introduced and a microscopic expression for this is derived. This framework allows one to perform the thermodynamic analysis of nonequilibrium steady states with smooth phase-space distribution functions which, as proven here, constitute the states of minimum entropy production when one considers small departures from stationarity.

A model for nonexponential relaxation and aging in dissipative systems.

The nonexponential relaxation and aging inherent to complex dynamics manifested in a wide variety of dissipative systems are analyzed through a model of diffusion in phase space in the presence of a nonconservative force. The action of this force establishes a heat flow which maintains the system away from equilibrium. The inability of the system to find its equilibrium state becomes apparent through the presence of an effective temperature field. This is the temperature of the stationary nonequilibrium state reached by the system satisfying a generalized version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The presence of a nonequilibrium temperature leads to a hierarchy of relaxation times responsible for the aging phenomena and to a relation similar to the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law [H. Vogel, Phys. Z. 22, 645 (1921); G. S. Fulcher, J. Am. Ceram. Soc. 8, 339 (1925); 8, 789 (1925); G. Tammann and W. Hesse, Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 156, 245 (1926)].

Simple model for nonexponential relaxation in complex dynamics.

The nonexponential relaxation occurring in complex dynamics manifested in a wide variety of systems is analyzed through a simple model of diffusion in phase space. It is found that the inability of the system to find its equilibrium state in any time scale becomes apparent in an effective temperature field, which leads to a hierarchy of relaxation times responsible for the slow relaxation phenomena.

Local quasi-equilibrium description of slow relaxation systems.

We present a dynamical description of slow relaxation processes based on the extension of Onsager's fluctuation theory to systems in local quasi-equilibrium. A non-Markovian Fokker-Planck equation for the conditional probability density is derived, and from it we obtain the relaxation equation for the moments. We show that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem can be formulated in terms of the temperature of the system at local quasi-equilibrium which is related to that of the bath by means of a scaling factor revealing lack of thermal equilibrium. Our theory may be applied to a wide variety of systems undergoing slow relaxation. We discuss in particular slow dynamics in glassy systems and Brownian motion in a granular gas.

Diffusion in tilted periodic potentials: Enhancement, universality, and scaling.

An exact analytical expression for the effective diffusion coefficient of an overdamped Brownian particle in a tilted periodic potential is derived for arbitrary potentials and arbitrary strengths of the thermal noise. Near the critical tilt (threshold of deterministic running solutions) a scaling behavior for weak thermal noise is revealed and various universality classes are identified. In comparison with the bare (potential-free) thermal diffusion, the effective diffusion coefficient in a critically tilted periodic potential may be, in principle, arbitrarily enhanced. For a realistic experimental setup, an enhancement by 14 orders of magnitude is predicted so that thermal diffusion should be observable on a macroscopic scale at room temperature.

Giant acceleration of free diffusion by use of tilted periodic potentials.

The effective diffusion coefficient for the overdamped Brownian motion in a tilted periodic potential is calculated in closed analytical form. Universality classes and scaling properties for weak thermal noise are identified near the threshold tilt where deterministic running solutions set in. In this regime the diffusion may be greatly enhanced, as compared to free thermal diffusion with, for a realistic experimental setup, an enhancement of up to 14 orders of magnitude.

Stochastic resonance in a suspension of magnetic dipoles under shear flow.

We show that a magnetic dipole in a shear flow under the action of an oscillating magnetic field displays stochastic resonance in the linear response regime. To this end, we compute the classical quantifiers of stochastic resonance, i.e., the signal to noise ratio, the escape time distribution, and the mean first passage time. We also discuss the limitations and role of the linear response theory in its applications to the theory of stochastic resonance.

Energy transduction in periodically driven non-hermitian systems.

We show a new mechanism to extract energy from nonequilibrium fluctuations typical of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems. The transduction of energy between the driving force and the system is revealed by an anomalous behavior of the susceptibility, leading to a diminution of the dissipated power and consequently to an improvement of the transport properties. The general framework is illustrated by the analysis of some relevant cases.
