[Effectiveness of the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax using small caliber pleural catheter].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax (PT) by small caliber pleural catheter (SCPC) carried out by physicians with no surgical experience in the emergency department. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with spontaneous PT (23 total, 4 of them tensional) were included in the study. An 8 French caliber polyethylene SCPC was inserted in all the patients requiring pleural drainage. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients (67%) required pleural drainage. The catheter was carried for a mean of 4 days (1-7) resolving PT in 27 (84%) with no resolution being achieved in 5 (15%) and posterior surgical treatment being required. No major complications were observed during the evolution. CONCLUSIONS: The use of small caliber pleural catheters in the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax (both total and to pressure) performed by physicians with no previous surgical knowledge is safe and effective.

The nifA gene of Rhizobium meliloti is oxygen regulated.

Experiments using plasmid-borne gene fusions and direct RNA measurements have revealed that expression from the nifA gene is induced in Rhizobium meliloti when the external oxygen concentration is reduced to microaerobic levels. Induction occurs in the absence of alfalfa and in the presence of fixed nitrogen and does not require ntrC. The production of functional nifA gene product (NifA) can be demonstrated by its ability to activate the nitrogenase promoter P1. Aerobic induction of nifA can also occur during nitrogen starvation at low pH, but in this case induction is dependent on ntrC and does not lead to P1 activation. The data indicate that reduced oxygen tension is potentially a major trigger for symbiotic activation of nitrogen fixation in Rhizobium species.

Is there right hemisphere dysfunction in major depression?

A line-bisection test was applied in order to detect the presence of right hemisphere dysfunction in patients with Major Affective Disorder (Nonpsychotic Major Depression). Depressive patients and control subjects did not differ in perception of the midpoint of the line. Both groups differed in dispersion to the mean value with the depressive patients showing less precision. These data are not supportive of the notion of a right hemisphere dysfunction in the depressive disorder.

Induction of polygalacturonase production in legume roots as a consequence of extrachromosomal DNA carried by Rhizobium meliloti.

The ability of Rhizobium meliloti to induce polygalacturonase production in legume roots decreased during culture under laboratory conditions but was inducible with mitomycin C. This character was irreversibly lost after treatment with acridine orange. Extrachromosomal DNA of molecular weight 5.9 x 10(6) daltons was detectable in neutral sucrose gradient but was absent from cells 'cured' with acridine orange. Therefore, the ability to induce the enzyme production may be controlled by a plasmid.

Quality and rate of extracellular polysaccharides produced by Rhizobium meliloti and their inducing effect on polygalacturonase production in legume roots as derived from the presence of extrachromosomal DNA.

The ability of extracellular polysaccharides of different strains of Rhizobium meliloti to induce the production of polygalacturonase by roots of Medicago sativa seedlings has been studied. Some strains showed a high inducing activity while those derived from them, after treatment with acridine orange and in which extrachromosomal DNA was absent, did not show this character. A comparative study of polysaccharide production and preliminary studies on the chemical composition of the active fractions obtained after Sephadex G-25 filtration indicated that the monomers which form the active fractions are qualitatively and quantitatively different according to their origin.
