[Splenic calcification following cat scratch disease].

In a 9-year-old girl presenting with symptoms of cat scratch disease, ultrasound of the spleen showed multiple round hypoechogenic nodules which turned into calcifications within a year. Two years later, splenic calcifications were unchanged.

Low cost equipment for rapid throughput chest radiography.

Reorganisation within Harrow Health District in 1987 resulted in chest services being centralised at Northwick Park Hospital, and during the planning period much thought was given to choosing cost effective equipment capable of a throughput of a minimum of 30 patients per hour. The equipment that has been installed is based on a Transworld DCX-100 MSP1 dedicated chest unit, and is currently the only unit of its kind installed in the UK. After two years of use it is now possible to make comments on the benefits and drawbacks of the system, and this article may be of particular interest to managers of imaging departments in district general hospitals where value for money with low capital outlay is an important consideration.

Biosynthesis of estradiol-17 beta fatty acyl esters by microsomes derived from bovine liver and adrenals.

A fatty acyl coenzyme A:estradiol-17 beta acyl transferase activity has been detected in bovine hepatic and adrenocortical microsomes. It is thoroughly increased when adenosine triphosphate (5 mM) and coenzyme A (1 mM) are added to incubation buffer. Using a substrate concentration of 185 microM, the hepatic and adrenocortical microsomal activities have been found to be to 2.4 +/- 0.1 and 5.5 +/- 0.2 nmol/h/mg prot., respectively. Five major estradiol-17-esters have been isolated by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography from both microsomal incubations, the fatty acid moieties being: arachidonate, linoleate, oleate, palmitate and stearate. However, the distribution of hepatic metabolites is quite different from that obtained with adrenocortical membranes, this is well explained by the corresponding differences between the endogenous contents of free fatty acids. With any of the two types of microsomal membranes used, the results show that estradiol is more susceptible to be esterified to polyunsaturated fatty acids than saturated ones. The possible physiological implications of such an activity in liver and adrenals are discussed.

Undergraduate teaching of oncology in Argentina.

Cancer is a public health problem in Argentina, and the role of the country's physicians in the fight against this disease is very important. Whether they are general physicians or specialists, including clinical oncologists, they must have basic knowledge and permanent updating in oncology. Unfortunately, the teaching of oncology is deficient in this country, the deficiencies being already noticeable at the undergraduate level where the teaching is incomplete and dispersed. In order to ascertain the level of oncologic information which medical students about to graduate had acquired, 15-hour courses were organized in 1983 to 1984 for students of the Universities of Buenos Aires, La Plata, and Del Salvador. The participants had to fill in a questionnaire of 50 questions of increasing complexity before and after the course. The comparison of both inquiries clearly showed the usefulness of the course, particularly regarding cancer control, early diagnosis, treatment, and curability. The overall error decreased by 50% after the course. However, some erroneous ideas still existed and it became evident that certain of the subjects must be studied in greater depth.

[Acute parvovirus B 19-induced erythroblastopenia and hereditary spherocytosis. Apropos of 1 pediatric case and review of the literature].

Authors report a new case of acute erythroblastopenia linked to a parvovirus B 19 infection by a 10 years old boy suffering from an hereditary spherocytosis. Aurillac antigen or parvovirus B 19 is one of the smallest virus to be known. It has been well demonstrated in vitro that the virus inhibits especially erythropoiesis but mechanism remains unclear. Systematic vaccination of all children at risk with congenital or acquired chronic haemolytic anaemia should be in the near future the best prophylaxis of parvovirus B 19 infections.

[Prolactin adenoma in a 14-year-old boy].

Prolactin dosage in delayed growth and puberty leads to the diagnosis of pituitary prolactinoma in a 14 years old boy. Adenoma's size, visual disturbance leads us to elect surgical treatment but persistent hyperprolactinemia after surgery requires medical treatment with bromocriptine.

Problems in the diagnosis of adrenal tumors.

The angiographic findings of cortical nodular hyperplasia, adenolipoma, and intracaval extension of recurrent pheochromocytoma were correlated with the pathological findings. Adenolipoma was angiographically similar to other adrenal neoplasms, adding difficulties to its differential diagnosis. Two cases of cortical nodular hyperplasia showed possibly pathognomonic patterns of discrete vascular cortical accumulations of contrast media which represent capillary malformations within the hyperplastic nodules. Intracaval extension of recurrent pheochromocytoma was found to be similar to other tumors which invade veins.
