Prevention of falls in the elderly population.

In response to the challenge posed by falls in the elderly, the Jewish Institute for Geriatric Care established a Falls Clinic. The coordinated expertise of a geriatrician, neurologist, cardiologist, and physiatrist were combined with resources in audiology, ophthalmology, and podiatry. Thirty-six patients enrolled in the study had sustained a total of 36 falls, which resulted in 13 fractures and seven soft-tissue injuries. Falls were a daily occurrence for three patients, weekly for five patients, monthly for ten, semiannually for 14, and yearly for four patients. After a one-year follow-up, 77% of the patients experienced no further falls. We suggest that falls are a multidisciplinary issue and recommend a team approach for successful management.

Inhibition of passive hemagglutination- a sensitive test for host antigen detection and evaluation of virus purity.

Inhibition of passive hemagglutination (IPHA) proved to be a very sensitive and specific reaction for immunochemical detection and dosage of host antigens or proteins impurifying various virus suspensions. Thus, IPHA is able to detect bovine serum albumin amounts of 0.05 mug/ml, and chorio-allantoic membrane antigens at a concentration of 0.35 mug/ml. The estimation of the ratio between specific activity (hemagglutinating (HA) titer in the case of influenza A0PR8 virus) and the amount of host proteins (evaluated by IPHA) is recommended as a criterion of virus purity. In the case of highly purified virus suspensions this criterion is more reliable than the presently used ratio between HA titer and total protein amount (estimated by Lowry's reaction).

Photodynamic effect of toluidine blue on MM virus.

The photodynamic effect of toluidine blue (TB) was studied on MM virus cultivated in L cells and on the RNA extracted form MM virus inoculated to mice by intracerebral route. MM virus infectivity is completely inhibited by the photodynamic action of TB, due to lesions at the molecular level of the viral RNA.
