Is dosage of hormone replacement therapy related with endometrial polyp formation?

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: To evaluate the effect of different doses of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on endometrial polyp formation. METHODS: 398 menopausal women were initially evaluated through transvaginal ultrasound and patients who already had endometrial polyps were excluded from the study. One hundred and six (26.6%) eligible patients were enrolled and randomized into two groups of 53 patients to receive two different doses of HRT. RESULTS: Six patients with endometrial polyps were detected in the first group and one patient in the second one (p = 0.0502 for total chi-square and p = .1172 for chi-square with continuity correction) after a mean duration of treatment of 26 months and 28,5 months, respectively. There was no difference in the mean number or the mean volume of the polyps between the two subgroups with positive results. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that endometrial polyp formation may be related with HRT dosage.

Recognition of anaerobic bacterial isolates in vitro using electronic nose technology.

AIMS: Use of an electronic nose (e.nose) system to differentiation between anaerobic bacteria grown in vitro on agar media. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cultures of Clostridium spp. (14 strains) and Bacteroides fragilis (12 strains) were grown on blood agar plates and incubated in sampling bags for 30 min before head space analysis of the volatiles. Qualitative analyses of the volatile production patterns was carried out using an e.nose system with 14 conducting polymer sensors. Using data analysis techniques such as principal components analysis (PCA), genetic algorithms and neural networks it was possible to differentiate between agar blanks and individual species which accounted for all the data. A total of eight unknowns were correctly discriminated into the bacterial groups. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of in vitro complex volatile pattern recognition and differentiation of anaerobic pathogens. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These results suggest the potential for application of e.nose technology in early diagnosis of microbial pathogens of medical importance.

A stepped forty-eighty hour manic-depressive cycle.

This paper describes a patient with an almost 48-hour manic-depressive cycle but with a daily shift of the switching time, the latter having itself a cycle of five days. The mood change always occurred gradually and during the day, never at night. Between manic and depressive phases there was a difference in the frequency of the EEG alpha rhythm. The patient showed a good response to lithium treatment.

[Compression and obstruction of the internal carotid artery by sellar and parasellar tumors].

It is classicaly admitted that the intracranial internal carotid artery after a first intracavernous segment, becomes intra-dural by perforating or passing through the dura. Since 1949, the first of us has refuted this conception as well as that of the artery floating in the venious blood of the cavernous sinus and has described to so-called cavernous sinus as a latero-seller extradural space into which the artery has but neighbourhood relationship with a venous plexus. During embryonic development the internal carotid artery is englobed by the dura which differentiates around the cerebral vessels. At a later stage, owing to the adhesion of the dural leaf to the intracranial periosteum, the internal carotid artery becomes closely attached to the bone at the level of the base of the anterior clinoid process. This explains that tumors developping in the sellar and parasellar region may compress or obstruct the carotid artery at this level causing neurologic symptoms of ischemic origin. Three similar cases are reported, a glioma of the optic nerve, an adenoma of the hypophysis and meningioma of the sphenoidal wing.
