Laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding: preliminary results of the University of Naples experience.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding (LASGB) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure indicated for the treatment of patients with morbid obesity. METHODS: From January 1996, eight patients successfully underwent the video-laparoscopic procedure. RESULTS: Preoperative body mass index was 44.4 +/- 4.7 (range 37.9-53.3). Mean operative time was 255 +/- 73 minutes (range 150-360). Mean hospital stay was 3 +/- 1 days. Intraoperative complications were absent. CONCLUSION: Preliminary results have been satisfactory, and encourage us to continue with LASGB.

Use of the laryngeal mask airway in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

PURPOSE: General anesthesia for the nonintubated oral and maxillofacial surgical patient presents unique anesthetic conditions. The primary concern is the maintenance of an unobstructed airway and protection against aspiration, while minimizing both interference and interruption of the surgical procedure. The laryngeal mask airway is an alternative to the nasal hood for such airway management. The purpose of this article is to inform the oral and maxillofacial surgeon of the clinical relevant information pertaining to the use of the laryngeal mask airway in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Experience with clinical use is discussed.

[Isolated thrombosis of the splenic vein in an infant. Splenectomy and reimplantation of splenic tissue].

The authors report a case of an infant affected by isolated thrombosis of splenic vein. They stress the necessity of a precious diagnosis in order to prevent the haemorragic consequences of distrectual portal hypertension. Splenectomy, the only therapeutic mean considered in these patients, has been followed, in our patient, by reimplantation of splenic tissue, in order to prevent the septic complicances (mainly due to pneumococcus) frequently occurring in splenectomized patients.
