Shear banding in twinned structure of copper deformed at 77 K.

The local crystallography and microstructure within shear bands has been examined in single crystals of {112}<111> orientation of pure copper deformed at 77 K by channel-die compression to true strains of about 1. Setting up a system for making high-resolution orientation maps using transmission electron microscopy has provided advantageous circumstances for the analysis of orientation changes within shear bands. The present work shows that, despite the plane strain deformation mode, the mechanism of lattice rotation within emerging shear bands may lead to Goss {110}< 001> and Brass{110}<112> texture components.

Update on the use of collagen/glycosaminoglycate skin substitute-six years of experiences with artificial skin in 15 German burn centers.

The clinical use of an artificial skin substitute (Integra) has been celebrated enthusiastically as an improvement in burn therapy over a period of more than 10 years. Many case-reports have shown the positive effects of the treatment with Integra as a skin substitute. In this study we examine the alterations of Integra-usage in Germany. Fifteen German burn centres have been interviewed respectively over a time period of 6 years with interviews in the years 1999, 2001, and 2003. The goal of this study is to focus on the problems associated with the use of artificial skin and to create a manual for Integra-therapy including indication, pre-, intra-, and postoperative treatment. Since the first Integra Users seminar in Germany in 1999 repeated interviews have been conducted with fifteen German burn centres. The collected results of the last 6 years were evaluated. These results show a change in the indication for the therapy with artificial skin towards extensive full thickness burned patients and as extended indication especially for posttraumatic reconstruction. This article gives our guidelines for the usage and handling of Integra and shows that Integra is an important reconstructive dermal substitute for the severely burned or posttraumatic patient if handled by a skilled surgeon in a correct way.

[P-wave ekg averaging technique--a new method of selecting patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation].

The aim of study was to assess the value of signal averaged ecg for detection of patients (pts) at risk for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (paf). We examined three groups of pts: group I-41 pts with nonvalvular paf, group II-20 pts with hypertension and/or ischemic heart disease without paf and group 3-26 health persons, without organic heart disease. In all pts the signal-averaged electrocardiogram triggered by P waves was recorded. Seven parameters of the spatial magnitude of filtered P wave were measured. Significant difference between group I and group II or III was found in most parameters. Using the method of multidimensional variance analysis we constructed "the diagnostic vector" in multidimensional parameters space, which was used to determine patients belonging to group. Total percent of right decision was 85%. These findings suggest that pts at risk for paf could be detected while in sinus rhythm by using the P wave-triggered signal-averaged ecg.
