Implicit identification of irrelevant local objects interacts with global/local processing of hierarchical stimuli.

This work aimed at studying interactions between automatic object identification and global/local perceptual processing. We designed a paradigm in which participants were presented with pairs of hierarchically organized items, composed of global forms made up of local forms. Both global and local forms could represent either objects or non-objects. Subjects were instructed to detect whether the two hierarchical items composing a pair were identical or different. In a dissimilar pair, items differed at one level (target level), the other level, made of similar forms on both sides, was irrelevant to perform the task. We hypothesized that the automatic identification of object could affect the global precedence principle defined by Navon. In agreement with our hypothesis, we found that when the irrelevant level was made of objects, the global precedence effect was reversed. In contrast, the irrelevant level had no effect when the target level included only objects, or when the irrelevant level was made of non-object, the global precedence principle was being preserved in these cases. This interaction is compatible with the existence of two distinct processes working in parallel, namely automatic identification and structural analysis, that could either interfere or act together for the detection of differences.

Toxic and essential trace metals in muscle, liver and kidney of bovines from a polluted area of Morocco.

Toxic and essential trace metals were measured in muscle, bone, liver and kidney of bovine grazing on the municipal wastewater spreading field of Marrakech City (Morocco). Bovines were found to be seriously contaminated by toxic metals, for metal bioaccumulation. The high cadmium content seemed to contribute to a reduction in zinc and copper levels. The arithmetic mean concentrations of zinc, especially cadmium, and levels were higher in liver and kidney, specific target organs copper and cadmium in liver and kidney, were respectively: 126, 112 and 5.1 microg/g in liver; 89, 33 and 10.3 microg/g in kidney.

[Atractylis gummifera L. poisoning: a case report].

Intoxication by Atractylis gummifera L. frequently happens in Morocco. It's often accidental and mortal if no precocious and effective treatment. In order to take stock of this intoxication of which diagnosis is clinical and treatment symptomatic, we suggest to analyze one clinical case of the intoxication by Atractylis gummifera L. on a 12 year old child who accidentally ingested this plant.

Access to deductive logic depends on a right ventromedial prefrontal area devoted to emotion and feeling: evidence from a training paradigm.

Does the human capacity for access to deductive logic depend on emotion and feeling? With positron emission tomography, we compared the brain networks recruited by two groups of subjects who were either able or not able to shift from errors to logical responses in a deductive reasoning task. They were scanned twice while performing the same task, before and after a training session. The error-to-logical shift occurred in a group that underwent logicoemotional training but not in the other group, trained in logic only-a "cold" kind of training. The intergroup comparison pointed out that access to deductive logic involved a right ventromedial prefrontal area known to be devoted to emotion and feeling.

Minerals, trace elements and related biological variables in athletes and during physical activity.

This review concerns various minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus), trace elements (zinc, manganese, selenium, copper, iron, cobalt, iodine, chromium, fluorine, lead, cadmium) and other biological variables (nitric oxide, L-carnitine, glutamine, serum transferrin receptor, biopyrrins) in relation to hemorheologic effects, stress, immune response and infections during physical and sports activities. In athletes, macroelements in the ionized form contribute to heart and muscle contractions, oxidative phosphorylation and the synthesis and activation of enzymatic systems. Zinc (Zn) protects against the effects of increased free reactive oxygen species such as copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) (Cu-Zn superoxide dismutases; Mn superoxide dismutase). Selenium in glutathione peroxidase protects the cardiovascular system and the muscles, and helps combat allergic and inflammatory diseases. Copper and iron are involved in many aspects of energy metabolism and are important components in the synthesis of hemoglobin, myoglobin and cytochromes. Fluorine and Cu protect the ligaments and tendons. Physical activity appears to be beneficial to urban residents who are exposed to metal pollution (lead, cadmium). The data cited in this review are often contradictory and incomplete. It is still unclear in many cases how minerals are involved in physiological changes, and much work remains.

Shifting from the perceptual brain to the logical brain: the neural impact of cognitive inhibition training.

What happens in the human brain when the mind has to inhibit a perceptual process in order to activate a logical reasoning process? Here, we use functional imaging to show the networks of brain areas involved in a deductive logic task performed twice by the same subjects, first with a perceptual bias and then with a logical response following bias-inhibition training. The main finding is a striking shift in the cortical anatomy of reasoning from the posterior part of the brain (the ventral and dorsal pathways) to a left-prefrontal network including the middle-frontal gyrus, Broca's area, the anterior insula, and the pre-SMA. This result indicates that such brain shifting is an essential element for human access to logical thinking.

Trace elements in children's hair, as related exposure in wastewater spreading field of Marrakesh (Morocco).

Lead and cadmium concentration was determined in the hair of 327 school children living in a wastewater spreading field of Marrakesh (Morocco). The influence of age, sex, food habits and family occupation on the children's hair Pb and Cd concentration was also evaluated. Girls had more metal in their hair than boys (16.5 +/- 5.4 micrograms/g and 12.5 +/- 3.5 micrograms/g, respectively). However, for Cd the boys had more metal (2.9 +/- 0.6 and 2.2 +/- 0.4, respectively) but the difference was not statistically significant and metal levels decreased with age. Family occupation, direct contact with wastewater, customs and food habits were the most significant factors influencing the metal content of children's hair. The average Pb and Cd content were higher in the exposed children (14.8 +/- 4.5 micrograms/g and 2.5 +/- 0.5 micrograms/g, respectively) than in the non-exposed children (4.6 +/- 2.2 micrograms/g and 0.6 +/- 0.2, respectively), but the difference was not statistically significant. This study shows that in this area all the population (especially children) was extremely exposed to the danger caused by potentially toxic metals.

Thiopurine methyl transferase activity: new extraction conditions for high-performance liquid chromatographic assay.

A new liquid-liquid extraction is described for thiopurine methyl transferase (TPMT, EC 2.1.1.67) activity determination: the use of a pH 9.5 NH4Cl buffer solution, before adding the solvent mixture, allows more rapid extraction, avoiding a centrifugation step, and reduces the global cost of analysis. After the extraction step, 6-methylmercaptopurine, synthesised during the enzymatic reaction, is determined by a liquid chromatographic assay. Analytical performance of the assay was tested on spiked erythrocyte lysates. The linear concentration range was 5-250 ng ml(-1) (r> or =0.997, slope=1.497, intercept=-0.367). The recoveries were 82.8, 89.9 and 82.2% for 75, 125 and 225 ng ml(-1), respectively. The coefficients of variation were < or =6.1% for within-day assay (n=6) and < or =9.5% for between-day assay precision (n=6; 14 days). TPMT activity was determined in a French adult Caucasian population (7 =70). The results ranged from 7.8 to 27.8 nmol h(-1) ml(-1) packed red blood cells and the frequency distribution histogram is similar to that previously published.

[Tox-Didact:CD-ROM for toxicology education. Value in hospital toxicology].

New teaching techniques should allow students more independence in their training, particularly in learning from problems and using clinical reasoning. We designed Tox-Didact, a modular multimedia educational software program, which is suitable for both students and professionals, regardless of their orientation (pharmacy or medicine) or level. Each module concerns four domains: diagnosis, biological monitoring, curative treatment and prevention. Tox-Didact is multidisciplinary, interactive, simple to use and reliable. Nineteen modules are now being prepared. In final form, Tox-Didact will cover all the acute and chronic pathologies of toxicology.

[Tools of the Internet in maxillofacial surgery and oral medicine. Practical applications].

Internet has a wide range of functions applicable in the medical domain. Its use has had a clear impact on routine medical practice. The user can consult colleagues, send and receive multimedia files, order books from the library, access specialized reviews or worldwide scientific data on-line as well as publish results, and participate in forums, telephone or organize teleconferences in real time. Faced with the abundance of the available information flow and the methodological difficulty in extracting precisely useful data, the ordinary user can wander a long time in cyber-space before learning the skills required for efficient navigation. We recall here the fundamental principles of the Internet and describe the types of information the maxillofacial surgeon can use in his everyday practice. Certain unanswered questions are debated as well as certain difficulties related to the use of the Internet in its present state of development.

Biological levels of aluminium after use of aluminium-containing bone cement in post-otoneurosurgery.

Use aluminium-containing biomaterials in otoneurosurgery for reconstitution of bone in contact with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) also led to cases of encephalopathy and death. We report aluminium (Al) concentrations in the biological fluids of six French patients following use of Al-containing bone cement in otoneurosurgery. In five patients, the mean plasma Al levels (microgram/L) were: 1.20 +/- 0.05 (case 2), 9.20 +/- 0.10 (case 3), 1.00 +/- 0.05 (case 4), 2.80 +/- 0.05 (case 5) and 2.00 +/- 0.05 (case 6). In case 1, Al concentrations were 176 micrograms/L in the postauricular CSF accumulation, 34 micrograms/L in the pontocerebellar angle and 4 and 6 micrograms/L in the lumbar shunt. As a precautionary measure, in the first three cases the biomaterial was removed soon after the intervention, and no increase in plasma or CSF Al was observed. In the other cases, absence of neurobiological symptoms and normal concentrations of Al in plasma led neurosurgeons not to extract this biomaterial. Al assay thus may be considered to be a complementary and at times a decision-generating factor. Care is needed at all stages from sampling through analysis because Al is ubiquitous and factually high results may be clinically misleading. Herein, such considerations are discussed in conjunction with the neurotoxicity of this metal in man. In addition, the authors call for in-depth preliminary trials of these biomaterials in animals prior to introduction on the market.

In vitro study of the antiseborrheic activity of zinc L-cysteate, a novel zinc compound, on rat preputial gland.

The antiseborrheic effect of zinc L-cysteate, a new zinc compound, was evaluated in vitro by determining the lipidic metabolic activity of rat preputial glands as measured by incorporation of 14C-sodium acetate. At 10(-3) and 10(-4) mol/l, zinc L-cysteate was more active than S-carboxymethyl L-cysteine used as reference in corresponding concentrations (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). The pharmacologic results seem promising for clinical studies in dermatology.

[Lingual osteoma. Apropos of a case].

The authors present a case of osteoma of the tongue. This tumor was discovered without any functional symptom. Surgical resection with histological examination gives the diagnostic. This choristoma is rare, benign and clinically poor. Osteoma of the tongue is a heterotopic bone tissue and his main differential diagnosis are lingual thyroid and thyroglossal cyst. There are several opinions concerning the histogenesis of this choristoma, but an embryological anomaly is probable. Surgical removal of the tumor is curative, without any reported local recurrence.

Absence of gastrointestinal absorption or urinary excretion of aluminium from an allantoinate complex contained in two antacid formulations in patients with normal renal function.

We studied the plasma and urinary excretion levels of aluminum (Al) on day 0, 10 and 30 in 79 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and normal renal function who were receiving a complex based on Al allantoinates [C4H5N4 O3 Al (OH)2] and [C4H5N4 O3 Cl Al2 (OH)4]. We evaluated the extent of Al absorption after repeated administration of this complex in two antacid formulations, Ulfon Lyoc in lyophilised tablet form (group 1; n = 40) and Ulfon suspension (group 2; n = 39). The total Al load for each antacid and patient was 512 mg daily for a total of 15360 mg during the 30-day treatment. No significant rise in plasma Al concentration was noted with either formulation between day 0 and 10, day 0 and 30 or day 10 and 30, nor was there any significant increase in urinary excretion levels. Al absorption was not increased and no toxic effects were noted, indicating that such formulations are suitable for long-term therapy in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.

French external quality assessment schemes for lead in blood and aluminum in plasma and dialysis water.

An external quality assessment scheme (EQAS) for lead in blood was established in France in 1992 at the request of the Ministry of Labour and organised by the Drug Bureau. Participation is mandatory for laboratories wishing to obtain ministerial approval for the determination of blood lead levels. In 1994, two interlaboratory comparative exercises were carried out, each involving the analysis of 3 samples of human blood (2 with and 1 without lead supplementation). Out of 66 enrolled laboratories, 58 and 60 participated in the two exercises, respectively. The scattering of results was quite comparable to that observed in other EQAS. The EQAS for plasma aluminium was established in 1983 at the request of the Commission on Trace Elements of the Société Française de Biologie Clinique. Today, 80 laboratories in 22 countries on 4 continents participate in this scheme. Six exercises are carried out each year, each including 3 plasma samples (2 with and 1 without aluminium supplementation), 2 samples of water supplemented with aluminium and a blank (water). The results obtained in this scheme showed an improvement in the quality of the analyses.

[Trismus disclosing Horton's disease].

The authors report a giant cell arteritis case associating trismus and hemifacial oedema in a febrile context. After spontaneous regression of other manifestations, the apparition of more typical signs allowed to associate the diagnosis of temporal arteritis, later confirmed histologically. Thus, when facing a trismus case, even more when fever is present, it seems important to associate with the Horton's disease, no matter what the antecedents found at the interrogatory be, whether initial or isolated. The Doppler reveals flux abnormalities of the superficial branches of the external carotid. The examination of facial, temporal and internal maxillary arteries has a good negative predictive value in this pathology. It would be useful in therapeutic supervision.

[Practical advice concerning biological fluids for analysis of trace-elements].

Sampling conditions are of utmost importance for the determination of trace elements in biological fluids. However, many biologists still underevaluate this critical step. This reports deals with collection of biological fluids from a routine point of view: detailed and careful descriptions of the contaminating role of air and the general handling of specimens are given in a practical and critical manner. The main commercial systems, made about needles, catheters, tubes (open and evacuated systems) and anticoagulants are reviewed. Choices and elementary rules, applicable in a hospital setting, are proposed.

[Determination of plasma retinol and alpha-tocopherol by HPLC].

Retinol (vit A) and alpha-tocopherol (vit E), the active compounds of vitamins A and E, were assayed by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (C18) with UV absorbance detection at 280 nm. Plasma was deproteinized and liquid-liquid extraction performed with hexane. After evaporation, the residue was dissolved in organic solvents (ether:methanol 25:75, V/V). Standard curves were prepared by adding known amounts of standards to plasma. The use of acetonitrile in the mobile phase (acetonitrile:methanol:water 64.5:33:2.5, V/V) avoided interference peaks, giving a total run time of 8 min. Analyte stability required that samples be treated in the dark. Analytical performance was good: recovery around 100%, detection limits 0.015 mg/l for vit A and 0.030 mg/l for vit E, linear range 2 mg/l for vit A and 20 mg/l for vit E, no recorded interference, and between-run and within-run precision with coefficients of variation < 11%. Analytes were stable at room temperature for 24 h (vit A) and 48 h (vit E) in plasma stored in the dark for one month at -20 degrees C. The standard solution containing both vit A and vit E increased vit A stability. Plasma concentrations (mg/l) for vit A and E were respectively: 0.63 +/- 0.17 and 9.61 +/- 3.1 in adults (n = 29), 0.39 +/- 0.17 et 7.10 +/- 2.41 in children 0 to 15 years (n = 21). This method allows regular monitoring of patients with cystic fibrosis to check for retinol and alpha-tocopherol deficiencies. The usefulness and results of the method are discussed in terms of previous studies.
