[Different course of myocardial infarction in old age].

For the assessment of the peculiarities of acute myocardial infarction in patients aged over 60 years 100 patients with this disease treated at the Department of Internal and Occupational Diseases, Silesian Medical Academy were compared with 100 patients aged below 60 years. The location of myocardial infarction was similar in both groups. In the younger group premature ventricular beats were more frequent while in the older group supraventricular or ventricular tachycardia and left bundle branch block were more frequent. The death rate was much higher in the older group.

[Effect of work in the coke-producing plant on the circulatory system of workers].

253 coke ++ plant workers employed for over 5 years were subject to examination. From among them 207 were exposed to very high concentrations of benzo-a-pyrene (BaP) and tar substances as well as to benzene, its homologues and carbon monoxide. However, none of these concentrations exceeded MAC value. Apart from routine medical examinations resting ECG was made and when necessary propranolol test, exercise test or even coronarography. In addition, polycardiographic and ultrasonocardiographic examinations were carried out. Comparing the results obtained in the group exposed with the controls it was found that arterial hypertension, coronary insufficiency and pathologic polycardiograms were more prevalent in the workers exposed. Chronic exposure to CO, BaP and smoking habit were considered to be factors exerting a deteriorating effect on cardiac muscle.

[Long-term oxygen therapy of chronic pulmonary heart disease].

Pulmonary artery pressure was measured in 70 patients with chronic bronchitis. Those with pulmonary hypertension underwent two hours oxygen therapy (flow 10-12 l/min). Those in whom a decrease of pulmonary artery pressure was observed were qualified for long term oxygen therapy (LTOT). In 32 patients which were qualified for LTOT, after a two week period of 18 hour per day oxygen therapy a decrease of systolic pulmonary arterial pressure from 336.1 mm Hg to 30.9 mm Hg and a decrease of mean pulmonary artery pressure from 25.9 to 23.2 mm Hg was observed.

[Health status of workers of polyvinyl chloride processing plants. II. Results of various biochemical studies].

In 255 workers of two PVC processing plants no changes have been found in routine laboratory tests. No deviations have been found in blood serum, bilirubin, cholesterol, creatinine, nitric residue of urea, calcium and phosphorus, either. Similarly, the activity of acid phosphatase and gammaglutamylotranspeptidase was not changed. In most examined groups a slight statistically significant increase in ALAT activity has been found, in others--increase in the activity of AspAT and basic phosphatase. Workers exposed to lead did not exhibit any laboratory plumbism symptoms. On the other hand, a significant decrease in the activity of erythrocytes deltaaminolevulinic acid dehydratase has been found. The studies suggest that workers processing PVC most probably exhibit slight toxic liver lesion.

[Health status of the workers of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) processing plant. III. State of the respiratory tract, immunoglobulins and NBT test].

255 workers processing polyvinyl chloride were examined. All of them underwent spirometric and polycardiographic tests and determination of phagocytic activity of granulocytes, the level of serum albumins and its fractions, and the level of immunoglobulins--IgA, IgG and IgM. The results were compared with the data from healthy non-exposed subjects. It was found that hazards resulting from polyvinyl chloride processing induce slight disturbances in lungs ventilating capacity and inhibit phagocytic activity of granulocytes.

Air Pollutants, Occupational↗

[Health status of workers in polyvinyl chloride processing plants. I. Evaluation of occupational exposure. Subjective and capillaroscopy studies. Conduction velocity in the motor nerves].

The examinations covered 255 workers of two polyvinyl chloride processing plants. All workers were subject to general medical examinations including electrocardiography. In a part of workers employed in the plant located in the Katowice Voivodeship, the dermatological tests and neurological examinations including testing the velocity of conduction in motor nerves were carried out and the selected group was subject also to capillaroscopy and dermatothermometry. In the examined workers no "vinyl chloride disease" was found; capillaroscopy and neurological examinations did not reveal any evident changes. However, some dermatoses, most frequently of allergic type, were often encountered.

Ultrastructural changes in the lungs after chronic experimental intoxication with benzine and ethyline vapour.

In the group of rabbits chronically intoxicated with petrol vapour slight changes in the dust cells of lungs in the form of cytoplasmic vacuolisation and accumulation of collagen almost completely disappeared 3 months after intoxication. Changes in animals intoxicated with ethyline were much more severe. Besides the accumulation of collagen, appearance of elastin areas, cytolysosomes, changes in the nucleus, widening of ergastoplasm, swelling and cristolysis of mitochondria were observed. Three months after intoxication the decrease of previously observed changes was noted.

Ultrastructural changes in the liver following chronic experimental intoxication with benzine and ethyline vapour.

The livers of two groups of rabbits exposed to longer lasting intoxication, one with benzine vapours and the other one with ethyline vapours, were subjected to examination in an electron microscope twice; immediately after the completion of intoxication and then 3 months later. In both groups there were found: dilatation of the perinuclear spaces, a symptom of nucleolus segregation, dilatation of the ergastoplasm, features of cristolysis of mitochondria and the absence of glycogen. These changes were more intensive in the animals intoxicated with ethyline. 3 months after the completion of the process of petrol intoxication the following was observed: persistence of the majority of the changes as well as accumulation of glycogen and hypertrophy of the smooth endoplasmatic reticulum. These changes were more intensified in animals intoxicated with ethyline.

[Health conditions of workers chronically exposed to ethyl gasoline and other petroleum products].

Results of 5-year periodic examinations and SDH, LAP and GGTP activity in blood serum of 207 workers chronically exposed to ethyl gasoline and other petroleum products were analysed. In addition, in the selected groups, the levels of IgA, IgG and IgM immunoglobulins, complement C3 fraction and alpha2 macroglobulins were determined. Results of objective and enzymatic examinations indicate a slight toxic liver lesion. No significant changes in albuminous fractions were found, except a significant reduction in alpha2 macroglobulins.
