[Epidemiological study of the symptomatology of childhood depression in Madrid school-age population].

OBJECTIVES: This study shows the results of an incidental analysis of the prevalence rate of childhood depression (dysthymia and major depression) obtained in an epidemiological cross-study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was carried out among Madrid's school-aged population from primary schools (3 degrees, 4 degrees and 5 degrees EGB). The sample included a total of 1,275 children, both boys and girls, between 8 and 11 years old. They were chosen at random from different school systems (public, semi-public and private) and educational levels (3 degrees, 4 degrees and 5 degrees EGB). The definition of "case" is based on Poznanski's semi-structured clinical interview (Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised, 1984) depending on DSM-III-R's operational criterion for dysthymia and major depression symptomatology. RESULTS: The prevalence rates obtained in the general school-aged population were 6.1% for dysthymia and 4% with major depression. The total rate of depressive disorders was 10.1%.

Prevalence of childhood depression: results of the first study in Spain.

Prevalence of depressive disorders was studied in 6432 children aged 8-11 years, selected by exhaustive random sampling in four Spanish cities and two rural areas. The number of non-participants was 38 (0.6%). Selection was by a two-stage procedure. At stage I, the Children's Depression Inventory was used to identify a sample for more intensive interviewing. At stage II, children were individually evaluated using a semi-structured interview, the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R). CDRS-R and DSM-III diagnostic criteria were used to define caseness. 1.8% of children met the criteria for major depression, with a further 6.4% being diagnosed as having dysthymic disorder.

[Hyperactivity and infantile depression: a frequent association?].

We analyzed the scores obtained on the Children Depression Scale (CDS) (1) in a group of hyperactive children (n = 39) and a control group (n = 15). We observed that there were more children with depression in the hyperactive group (9) than in the control group (O). No significant differences appeared in the hyperactive index (Conners Teacher Rating Scale) between the depressed hyperactive group (DHG) and the non-depressed hyperactive group (HG). No significant correlation appeared between the level of hyperactivity and depression. The HG group showed no significant difference in their performance on the CDS subtests with respect to the control group. However, the results of the "Positive Varios" (PV) subtest would indicate the existence of greater feelings of sadness, unhappiness and the absence of entertainment in this group.

[Minor neurological signs and infantile hyperactivity: a new step in nosologic advances?].

The many redefiniations of the hyperactivity has resulted in a more delimited concept with entity in intself. Neurological Soft Sings (NSS), which are relevant semiological data, have been evaluated from a sample with stricting criteria regarding hyperactivity. The sample results show a statistical correlation among NSS and those results got from controls. However the absence of NSS does not preclude the diagnostic.

Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity↗

[Neurophysiologic bases and neuropsychological approach to the study of infantile hyperactivity].

Hyperactivity is a common important group of childhood behaviour problems with great influence on the personal, familiar and social sphere, a better knowledge of which is important. Up to now several explanatory hypotheses have been pointed out. From some time ago, the physiopathological roots of this clinical description has been studied in depth. The authors make a review of the neurophysiological and neuropsychological bases of hyperactivity in children.

[Memory disorders and attention deficit modulation in child hyperactivity].

The infantile hyperactivity is a disorder of great significance due to its remarkable after-effects on the family, the school and the individual. According to strict diagnostic criteria the study of the memory in these children who present a well defined disorder of the attention, has been planned. The data show that the mnemonic capacity is primarily kept. However the nuclear problem is an attention deficit.
