Biochemical basis of the serological cross-reactions between Brucella abortus and Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O:9.

A method based on the inhibition of agglutination is described that may be used for the differential serological diagnosis between B. abortus and Y. enterocolitica serotype O:9. An antigen with high immunological capacity was isolated from Brucella. This antigen inhibited both homologous and heterologous agglutination by Brucella antiserum, but only the heterologous agglutination by Yersinia antiserum. It proved to be constitued of a polysaccharide (N-acetylglucosamine, glucose, mannose and 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonic acid), a protein and a phosphoglycerid moiety. Lipid A was absent from the Brucella antigen. Incomplete polysaccharide synthesis of the Brucella antigen, with concomitant loss of serological specificity by the rough mutant has been described. Oligosaccharides containing N-acetylgalactosamine, glucose and galactose were isolated from the specific side chain of Yersinia lipopolysaccharide. Lipid A constituents were also identified in the latter.

Behaviour of leukocyte acid phosphatase in various chronic diseases.

Leukocyte acid phosphatases were investigated in 146 patients with different chronic diseases. The method of investigation used was that of Kaplow and Burstone slightly modified by the authors in what regards the pH of the incubation medium. Normal or slightly increased scores were observed in the granulocytic series of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic hepatitis, lupus erythematosus disseminatus and chronic lymphocytic leukemia a moderate enzymatic activity was generally observed in the lymphocyte and more marked in severe forms of disease. A marked increase of the enzyme activity was observed in patients with myeloma. The possibility of a correlation between the intensity of enzyme activity and immunoglobulin formation is discussed.

[Difficulties in diagnosis and surgical treatment of subacute and chronic thyroiditis].

Out of a total number of 875 cases of thyroid affections of various origins, hospitalized in the two surgical clinics of Tîrgu-Mureş, the authors selected 16 cases of subacute and chronic thyroiditis. They indicate the difficulties encountered in establishing the diagnosis before surgery, a fact that determined wide excisions in extremely difficult local conditions. They suggest, as a first therapeutic attitude, a conservative treatment with steroid drugs, antibiotics and roentgentherapy (when necessary), and, if such treatments fail, or when malignancies are suspected, as well as compression phenomena have developed, surgical treatment preceded by an extemporaneous anatomo-pathological examination. When thyroiditis is diagnosed surgery should be limited to decompressing incisions.

Conventional spectral Doppler and color Doppler ultrasound imaging. Principles, limitations, artifacts and clinical indications in hepatology.

The physical principles, limitations, errors and indications of conventional Doppler and color encoded Doppler sonography are reviewed and their applications in the investigation of liver, spleen, portal and suprahepatic portal venous circulation are analysed. The actual possibilities and advantages of Doppler imaging, both in normal conditions and in pathologic ones, such as portal hypertension, portal venous thrombosis or cavernous transformation, liver cirrhosis, hepatoma and liver transplantation are discussed.

Artifacts

Advances in the early diagnosis and therapy of primary liver cancer.

The prevalence of primary liver cancer (PLC), unlike that of the other digestive carcinomas, is constantly increasing. Epidemiologic data have revealed the risk factors for PLC. New methods of detection allow to define the cases at high risk for PLC, and an active follow-up permits the early disease detection, when the tumor can still be operated on. The diagnostic value of each method is analysed.

Age Factors

[Changes in time of the microbial flora in bronchopulmonary infections].

The authors carried out a study on 100 cases with broncho-pulmonary infections in two different periods: 1963--1964 and 1973--1974. Changes in the microbial flora were investigated, as well as the sensitivity of germs to antibiotics. An increase was noted in the number of chronic bronchitis and a decrease in the number of pneumonia cases. In the microbial flora there was a constant proportion of staphylococcus, streptococcus and coli strains. The proportion of micrococci decreased with time and pneumococci practically disappeared, being replaced by klebsiella germs. Sensitivity to penicilin remained almost identical while that to chloramphenicol decreased significantly, as well as sensitivity to tetracycline and neomycine. The practical conclusion is that in some cases the application of penicilin treatment, before the results of the antibiogram are available appears to be justified.

Anti-Bacterial Agents

Toxoplasmosis prevalence parasitologically evaluated in meat animals.

The frequency of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the meat provided by two abattoirs, as well as the pathogenicity of the isolated strains were studied. The parasite carriage was investigated on 299 pools of diaphragmatic muscle (1 pool = 10 animals) from 740 swine, 910 cattle and 1340 sheep: the methods used were bioassays on mice and the precocious identification of the tachyzoites in the peritoneal exudate and after 30 days the cerebral cysts. There were obtained 27 positive results (9.01%), in the examined pools of meat, without significant differences as concerns the frequency in relation to the animal species. Out of these strains two were virulent for mice and rabbits.

[Diagnostic and treatment possibilities in cochleovestibular syndromes].

The cases of cochleovestibular syndromes admitted into the O.R.L. ward during one year are statistically processed. 81 cases of hypoacusis of perception and vertiginous syndromes were admitted between January 1 and December 31, 1987. 42 of them were males and 29 females. 31 were pure cochlear syndromes, 32 vestibular syndromes without affecting the cochlea, and 15 were cochleovestibular syndromes. The paper surveys the available ways of investigation, by which a topographic and etiologic diagnosis can be determined, within certain limits and an adequate treatment can be recommended.

[Passivity of certain disinfectant substances in the presence of acrylic resins].

On the basis of data published in the specialized literature the authors have experimented the effects of five substances currently used for the disinfection of prostheses. These included: Denclen (a British product), Super Quick's (made in the FRG), and Leodent also a West German product), as well as two general disinfectants of the buccal cavity: perogen and bromocet, on the acrylic resins used for the dental prostheses: Superpont (made in Czechoslovakia) and Romacryl (a Romanian product). The study showed that these substances, both the special ones and the general disinfectants are not completely passive when in contact with the acrylic prostheses. They should be used with care, and in accordance with the indications concerning concentration and duration of application.

[Venous vascular changes in prostatic adenomyomatosis].

An important role should be attributed to the prostatic venous complex and to its pathology in the clinical aspects of prostate adenoma. This appears to be responsible for the acute retention of urine as well as for the hemorrhages that accompany the disease. The authors, on the occasion of 50 adenomectomies by the trans-vesical method, have carried out histological investigations on the excised tissues and made a correlation with the microscopic aspects of the peri-orificial urethra and of the prosthatic urethra, in connection with the changes noted in the venous system. The veins have displayed more or less important changes in all the cases. These consisted in stasis, lacunar dilatations or of the varicose type, inflammations or parietal modifications of a different origin. At the same time were noted signs of inflammation in the submucosa as well as in the muscular layer of the bladder wall, which appeared to be distrophic. The pathogenic role is stressed of the venous system in the developement of the clinical aspects especially in type II and III of a personal classification.

Experimental studies concerning the mechanism of the thyroid-pineal interrelationship. I. The action of the pineal peptides on the thyroid gland.

Subcutaneous administration of a pineal polypeptide extract, "Crinofizin", to adult male Wistar rats having the thyroid function inhibited by prolonged administration of MTU, has important effects on both the whole organism (slightly correcting the weight increase rate, loweri g cholesterolemia) and the thyroid gland (reducing thyroid hyperplasia and playing a part in various stages of thyroid hormones metabolism). Thus under pineal treatment one can observe a clear tendency to return to the normal values of the thyroid parameters strongly modified by MTU, as RIC, intrathyroid proteic iodine, tissue thyroid hormones distribution, blood PBI and total T4. It appears that these effects of pineal peptides are induced directly on the thyroid and/or via the hypophyso-thyroid axis which they intercept and equilibrate (moderate).
