Elephantiasis of eyelids following repeated craniotomy. Case report.

A case is reported in which craniectomy for removal of right frontal meningioma was complicated by porencephaly. A peculiar granulomatous area was found over the brain at reoperation for cranioplasty. Iodine solution was used to paint the reactive material under the scalp flap. Giant swelling of the isilateral eyelids gradually developed, ascribed to interference with lymphatic drainage from the eyelids. There was no communication between eyelids and cerebrospinal fluid spaces. The enlarged eyelids were removed by ophthalmic plastic surgery.

Neurosurgical complications of heroin addiction: brain abscess and mycotic aneurysm.

Few neurosurgical complications occur as the result of heroin addiction. One case of brain abscess and another of brain abscess associated with mycotic aneurysm caused by such addiction are presented.

Bilateral temporal-middle cerebral artery anastomosis for Moyamoya syndrome.

Moyamoya syndrome has been recognized for approximately 15 years. Medical and surgical treatment by sympathectomy and ganglionectomy has proved futile. This report presents a case treated by bilateral superficial temporal artery, middle cerebral artery anastomosis in a black American male.

Suprasellar osteogenic sarcoma following radiation for pituitary adenoma. Case report.

The authors report a case in which sellar and suprasellar osteogenic sarcoma developed 10 years after radiation therapy for pituitary adenoma. The literature is reviewed and the rarity of this condition discussed.

Spinal cord injury in a fetus.

In her eighth month of pregnancy a woman was stabbed in the abdomen with a barbecue fork. Upon delivery one week later, the child was noted to have two scars in the thoracic region on the back. The legs were flaccid. Surgical exploration at the age of seven months revealed marked, dense scarring of spinal cord and arachnoid membrane. No similar case was found in the literature.

Intracranial neurosurgical treatment of occlusive cerebrovascular disease.

Anastomosis of the extracranial superficial temporal artery to the intracranial middle cerebral artery offers an additional source of blood to the cerebral circulation in patients with transient ischemic episodes. Fourteen cases are reported. Two representative cases with three anastomoses demonstrate the use of this technique in occlusion of the internal carotid artery, occlusion of the middle cerebral artery and stenosis of the middle cerebral artery. Indications and contraindications of the procedure are discussed.
