Developing a competency-based orientation program: the challenge of a multidisciplinary pediatric unit.

In today's era of specialization, preparing novice nurses to assume care of infants, children, and adolescents in a multidisciplinary pediatric unit can be a formidable challenge, and until now, the nursing literature has lacked reference to a pediatric competency-based orientation program. This article discusses both the process and outcome of developing a pediatric competency-based orIEntation program for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Competency statements, documentation forms, sample learning tools, and recommendations for revision are provided to enhance reader utilization.

Preparing families of children with gastrostomies.

Comprehensive care of the child with a gastrostomy must extend beyond the initial hospitalization for placement. Optimal postoperative care and bedside discharge teaching are only the first steps in meeting the psychologics and developmental needs of the child and family. The education process should include family as well as community professionals.

Bulimia: a look from within.

With the incidence of bulimia increasing among women in their 20s and 30s, this disease may not afflict only adolescent patients but their caregivers as well. How then does the caregiver with bulimia seek care? The author outlines her personal battle with bulimia in hopes of empowering other caregivers to obtain the assistance they require to overcome this silent addiction.
