Do doctors recognise eating disorders in children?

The aim of this study was to determine whether doctors recognise eating disorders in children, in particular anorexia nervosa. A group of paediatricians, general practitioners, and school medical officers was approached to participate in the study. Each was sent a questionnaire including two case vignettes of children with anorexia nervosa and questions about diagnosis and management. The response rate was 64.5%. Of 97 different diagnosis suggested, only one quarter were psychiatric or psychological. One third of the paediatricians mentioned anorexia nervosa within their differential diagnosis in both cases compared with 2% of primary care physicians. These results suggest that doctors' awareness of childhood onset eating disorders remains limited. A delay in appropriate treatment has potentially adverse consequences for prognosis.

Attitudes of postpartum mothers concerning children and child rearing.

To assess contemporary maternal attitudes about children, child rearing, and family life, a 32-item attitude scale--the Parent Attitude Scale (PAS)--was developed and given to 523 postpartum mothers. The PAS was shown to be a highly reliable attitude assessment instrument. Maternal attitudes generally were pro-child in nature. Variations in total and individual item PAS scores were a function of maternal race, age, marital status, and employment status. Implications of the attitude survey for clinicians in terms of the treatment and prevention of developmental problems and for physician-parent interactions, are discussed.

Family therapy in family practice: a solution to psychosocial problems?

The family physician can make advances toward helping parents and children with emotional or behavioral problems quickly and effectively in an office setting by gaining competence in family therapy. After learning to recognize several clinical presentations of families with behavioral and emotional problems, the physician can implement an abridged version of family therapy. This study suggest that a two-hour workshop on family therapy can increase physician awareness of the need to interact with dysfunctional families who present a child as the symptom bearer. The results also demonstrate that the actual clinical application of the therapeutic method may vary with physician's years in practice.
