Analysis of a visual prompting procedure on acquisition and generalization of coin skills by mentally retarded children.

The effects of a visual prompting procedure were evaluated as a means of training four mentally retarded children to make purchases. Following baseline, training consisted of teaching students to use a number line to make purchases. Posttesting and follow-up were conducted after training. Results indicated all students acquired coin skills taught during training, generalized skills to untrained items, and maintained skills over a 4-week interval. Removal of visual prompts (fading) resulted in improvement for all children on the training items. Similar results occurred for untrained items. In addition, all children improved in their ability to make purchases in a more natural environment, the school store.

Teaching selected microcomputer skills to retarded students via picture prompts.

Five retarded students were taught to use picture prompts to help them access and terminate a microcomputer program. Training was provided within a multiple baseline format. Posttesting (picture prompts without feedback), and a return to baseline were later conducted for both the training program and an untrained (generalization) program. The results indicate that the program was successful in teaching the microcomputer skills to the students. In addition, all students were able to maintain their skills over a 7-day interval in which they did not have access to the microcomputer.

Regression of cervicovaginal abnormalities in DES-exposed women. A comparison of changes in sexually inactive women and the effects of the onset of sexual activity.

Sequential colpophotographs were reviewed from a group of 1,139 female progeny exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero and who were not yet sexually active on initial examination. Forty had ectopy. For 27 the normalized yearly rate of squamous metaplasia (replacement of columnar epithelium) was 28.8 +/- 3.7% (SEM). For the 18 who became sexually active the normalized yearly rate of squamous metaplasia was 54.6 +/- 6.2%. Thus, the sexually active women demonstrated a more rapid rate of squamous metaplasia; that rate was statistically significant (T = 3.8, p less than 0.001). The cervicovaginal hood was observed to regress slowly, and no effect of sexual activity could be demonstrated. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 was found in three patients. It occurred only in those who became sexually active, and the incidence was significantly different from that in the group that remained sexually inactive. The development of a small cervical os was found in two of the sexually active women without any local therapy.

Adult adjustment among high school graduates with mild disabilities.

This study investigated the adult adjustment of a statewide random sample of 737 young adults with learning disabilities, 59 labeled behaviorally disordered, and 142 labeled mentally disabled, all graduates of special education resource teacher programs. Results are reported in terms of (a) general status information, such as marital status and living arrangements; (b) information about those competitively employed, such as wages, hours worked per week, and percentage of living expenses paid; and (c) comparison of competitively employed versus unemployed individuals, in terms of high school vocational training and work experiences. Information is also provided on postsecondary education and overall "successful" adult adjustment. Data are compared across disability groups and across gender, where relevant.
