Total parenteral nutrition at home: the implications for a rural practice.

For various reasons we were faced with the choice of carrying out total parenteral nutrition of a patient at home, or allowing him to die untreated.The logistic problems of organizing supplies and technical support in a rural practice 32 km (20 miles) from the nearest hospital are described, in the hope of showing that in better circumstances carrying out total parenteral nutrition at home is feasible in general practice.

Stress analysis of disjunct removable partial dentures.

The (1) tooth-supported, (2) ridge-supported, and (3) tooth- and ridge-supported variations of the disjunct removable partial denture were studied. When testing loads were applied to three sites, bilaterally and unilaterally, it was found that the stresses were highest when the removable partial framework was tooth-support. No significant difference was recorded between the ridge-supported partial denture and the tooth- and ridge-supported partial framework. Further refinement of the pinsleeve mechanism may be necessary to effect better control over the distributions of the stresses.

Education in prosthodontics: Britain, South Africa, and Australia.

The consultant in restorative density, Great Britain's closest equivalent to the prosthodontist in the United States, has a broad base of specialist training that includes periodontology, conservative dentistry, and prosthodontics. The dentist specialising only in prosthodontics is rare. British dental education has developed a curriculum that educates a dental provider to serve the needs of the British Health Service and as such has not emphasized prosthodontics as a separate discipline in either the undergraduate or graduate level.
