The best coating material for hemoperfusion: comparation of cellulose nitrate with cellulose acetate and derivatives.

In this study the clearance characteristics of the two most widely used membrane systems (cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate) were compared in order to obtain the best coating material for hemoperfusion. The columns containing uncoated or coated charcoal granules were tested using creatinine, uric acid and vitamin B-12. The platelet loss were also analyzed using bovine blood. The membrane thickness was kept constant (0.5% by weight) in all membrane systems. Due to the simple coating procedure, cellulose nitrate coating, which also has good biocompatibility and high removal rates for toxins, was found to be preferable.

Dialysis of middle molecules at pulsatile flow.

Pulsatile flow was used in a continuous flow flat-plate dialyzer in order to achieve the more efficient removal of middle molecules. The solutes ranged in the molecular weights from 342 (sucrose) to 1355 (vitamin B-12). The permeability of Cuprophane membrane to sucrose, raffinose and vitamin B-12 were calculated both for pulseless and pulsatile flows. It was found that pulsatile flow is more favorable than steady flow with regard to increase of membrane permeability. However, as the solute molecular weight increases, fluid-phase resistances become relatively less important and the transport rate becomes dominated by the membrane properties.

Pulsatile flow in hemodialyzers.

The present work is concerned with the calculation of NaCl transfer in flowing solutions and its dependence upon flow characteristics at hemodialyzers. A theoretical analysis of the solute transfer in a hemodialyzer is presented. Experiments were carried out with a continuous flow flat-plate dialyzer. Permeability of cuprophane membranes were calculated both for pulseless and pulsatile flows. It was found that the membrane permeability increases with flow rate but the asymptotic value of pulsatile flow is remarkably higher than that of the pulseless flow. The difference between the transfer capabilities of the two flow regimes was found to be more than 100 percent.
