PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to determine the radiosensitivity and the growth kinetics of pulmonary micrometastases of the R1H-tumor of the rat. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Lung metastases were induced by intravenous injection of viable tumor cells. At different time intervals (3 to 32 days) after injection, lungs were locally irradiated, using 1.5 Gy per fraction. Total doses of 6 to 33 Gy were administered within eleven days. Animals exhibiting a dyspnoea were sacrificed and the number of metastases in the lungs were determined. The data were evaluated using the multi-target model. RESULTS: Beginning in the fifth week after tumor cell inoculation the animals started to exhibit a pronounced dyspnoea and were sacrificed. Sections revealed an extensive metastatic infiltration of the lungs. The number of metastases found in the lungs decreased with increasing total dose. The irradiation showed to be more effective in case of short intervals between induction of metastases and start of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Metastatic growth does not start earlier than three days after tumor cell inoculation. The doubling time of the tumor cells in the micrometastases decreases continuously from 5.2 to 1.7 days between the third and the 32nd day. During the first four weeks of metastatic growth the radiosensitivity of metastatic R1H-cells in the lungs is the same as in vitro.
The chronic cerebral retinal insufficiency syndrome in elderly patients is an organ specific expression of a generalized vascular cerebral deficiency. The progress of the disease is characterized by complex symptoms, variation in course, spontaneous remissions and, until recently inadequate diagnostic measurement methods. The new method of automated perimetry with the octopus 2000 P offers a patient-friendly procedure for indirect non-invasive diagnosis of circulatory state in limited cerebral retinal perfusion. In the present study measurements were made with this method on 24 patients (4 men and 20 women with an age of 74.9 +/- 6.9 years). The effect of the extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) on the reversibility of visual field disturbances was tested using a randomized and double blind study-design in two phases and with two dose levels. The main parameter investigated in this study was the change in the luminous density difference threshold after therapy with EGb 761. In group B (EGb 761 dose 160 mg/day) a significant increase in retinal sensitivity was seen within 4 weeks (p less than 0.05). In the lower dose (80 mg EGb 761/day) group (A), this change in retinal sensitivity was first seen after increasing the dose to 160 mg/day (p less than 0.01). The relative sensitivity of damaged retinal areas was more strongly influenced than "healthy" areas. The assessment by both doctors and patients of the general condition of the patients showed a significant improvement after the course of therapy. The results presented here show that damage to the visual field by chronic lack of bloodflow are significantly reversible.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
In 148 patients (medium of 59, 1 years) we investigated the natural history of chronic gastritis within 1-7 years (average of 5.9 years). We performed two biopsies, but in 35 cases 3 or 4 biopsies. In most patients the histological picture was not changed. In superficial gastritis of the body we observed a regression more often than a progression. Regression of atrophic gastritis was see in body and antrum. The rate of regression was higher in cases with 3 or 4 biopsies and with a longer interval of observation. The frequency of regression was higher than awaited according to simultaneous biopsies (criticism of method). There was no difference of rate of regression in various age groups and in various diagnosis (gastric or duodenal ulcer). In gastritis Type B the regression was more seldom than in gastritis Type a or type AB. For spontaneous regression no cause was found.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method is described which determines ibuprofen in human capillary or venous plasma. Ibuprofen plus the internal standard, flurbiprofen, were extracted from acidified plasma with pentane-ether, back-extracted into base, and then extracted into the pentane-ether solution after acidification of the aqueous phase. A reverse-phase octadecylsilane column with acetonitrile-water-phosphoric acid as mobile phase and UV detection provided a quantifiable peak for 1 microgram/mL of ibuprofen in 0.1 mL of plasma. Capillary and venous plasma level curves were virtually superimposable after administration of 400 mg of ibuprofen to four normal volunteers. No ibuprofen was detected in the saliva of the subjects.
A reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method is described for the determination of flurbiprofen in human serum. Flurbiprofen is extracted from hydrochloric acid-acidified serum with pentane-ether (80:20). An octadecylsilane column was used with a mobile phase of acetonitrile-water-phosphoric acid (650:350:0.5, v/v/v). A fluorescence detector with excitation at 250 nm and emission at 315 nm provided a quantifiable peak for 0.1 microgram/mL of flurbiprofen in 0.5 mL of plasma. A comparison between UV and fluorescence detection systems is presented. The method is applicable to human bioavailability and pharmacokinetic studies with flurbiprofen.
In 55 Patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia from Non-European countries gastric mucosa from antrum and corpus was examined (by taking at least two specimens, at least one of them includes muscularis mucosae). For comparison we took 87 patients from European countries (incl. GDR). With regard to the gastritis of antrum we observed no differences. On the other hand in corpus we found a normal mucosa more often among patients from Non-European countries, especially from Asia and Africa and in age group 40-49 years. Presumably in these patients chronic gastritis comes in older age.

From each of 2 tetanic herds and 1 control herd 20 cows were randomly selected to determine serum levels of Mg, Ca, inorganic P, Na, K, Cl-, total protein, urea, GOT-activity and blood-glucose level. In rumen fluid the number of ciliates, ammonia, level, pH and total acidity were examined. Haematological investigations were carried out. Moreover dry matter and height of the herbage were measured, and meteorological measurements were utilized. The investigations were carried out before grazing and than on the 4th, 8th, 12th, and 16th day of grazing. Symptoms of metabolic disturbances and alcalic indigestion were found to be more distinct in the tetanic herds than in control herd. The method of MgO-pulverization on pastures was found to be useless. On the other hand, MgO-food-supplementation according to generally known methods was found to be of high usefulness. MgO-treatment at a dose of 50 g per cow and day in a period of 14 days before grazing effectively prevented the outbreak of hypomagnesaemia in spite of such tetanogenic factors as unfavourable weather, insufficience of dry matter in the herbage and subclinical alcalic indigestion with disturbed nitrogen metabolism.
The case of a 48-year-old patient suffering from a malaria tropica with heart involvement is reported. The affection of the heart shows a disturbed conduction. The pathogenesis of the affection of the heart in malaria tropica is discussed.
