Raman scattering in crystalline oligothiophenes: a comparison between density functional theory and bond polarizability model.

Raman intensity of intramolecular and lattice modes of crystalline alpha-bithiophene (alpha-2T) are investigated within density functional theory using a nonlinear response formalism. First, comparison between the calculated Raman spectrum and the experimental data allows the assignment of the main Raman lines over the whole frequency range. Then, a bond polarizability (BP) model, limited to first neighbors, is built. We show that, although the BP model cannot reproduce the changes of dielectric susceptibility under individual atomic displacements, it is accurate enough to reproduce the profile of the unpolarized nonresonant Raman spectrum of alpha-2T powder. Finally, the BP model, fitted on our first-principles results on alpha-2T, is applied with success to the alpha-quaterthiophene polymorph phases and alpha-sexithiophene, demonstrating on practical examples that first-principles and BP approaches are powerful complementary tools to calculate the nonresonant Raman spectrum of alpha-2T and make reasonable predictions on larger oligothiophenes.

Incidence of aflatoxins in Iran pistachio nuts.

Aflatoxins (AF) are highly toxic and carcinogenic secondary fungal metabolites and have been detected in various food commodities including pistachio nuts. Pistachio nuts were produced in Iran during March 2002-February 2003 analyzed for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), aflatoxin B2 (AFB2), aflatoxin G1 (AFG1) and aflatoxin G2 (AFG2) using immunoaffinity column and quantitated by HPLC and/or TLC-scanner. In this regard, 3356 pistachio nut samples were collected. After dividing samples to sub-samples, 10,068 AF analyses were done. Among 10,068 samples analyzed, AFB1 was detected in 3699 samples (36.7% of the total) with the mean and median of 5.9 (+/-41.7) ng/g and 0.1 ng/g, respectively. Total AF (AFT) was detected in 2852 samples (28.3% of the total) with the mean and median of 7.3 (+/-53.2)ng/g and 0.4 ng/g, respectively. AFB1 level in 1191 samples (11.8%) was above the maximum tolerated level (MTL) of AFB1 in pistachio nut in Iran (5 ng/g). Regarding AFT, the mean contamination level (7.3 ng/g) was lower than MTL of AFT in pistachio nut in Iran as well as lower than the proposed draft maximum level of Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants for AFT (15 ng/g), and only 7.5% of samples had levels above the MTL.

Infrared spectroscopy of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

By using the spectral moments method, we calculate the infrared spectra of chiral and achiral single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different diameters and lengths. We show that the number of the infrared modes, their frequencies, and intensities depend on the length and chirality of the nanotubes. Furthermore, the dependence of the infrared spectrum as a function of the size of the SWCNT bundle is analyzed. These predictions are useful to interpret the experimental infrared spectra of SWCNTs.

Polymorphism of crystalline alpha-quaterthiophene and alpha-sexithiophene: ab initio analysis and comparison with inelastic neutron scattering response.

Phonons in the alpha-quaterthiophene (4T) and alpha-sexithiophene (6T) polymorph phases are investigated using the direct method combined with density functional theory (DFT)-based total energy calculations. The simulation of inelastic neutron scattering spectra (INS) on the LT and HT polymorph phases of 4T and 6T enable the corresponding spectral signatures of these materials to be identified. In particular, there are two fingerprints: (i) the low-frequency vibrational modes (frequencies lower than 200 cm(-1)) and (ii) the vibrational modes in the 600-900 cm(-1) frequency range. The good agreement with the INS experimental data allows us to assign unambiguously the origin of all features (first-order and high-order processes) of these spectra and to predict that the LT phase is the phase measured experimentally both on the 4T and 6T materials. Moreover, the broad background in the 600-1400 cm(-1) frequency range and the well-defined features which appear around 940 cm(-1) in the calculated INS spectra of 4T/HT and 6T/HT are assigned to multiphonon contributions. This multiphonon contribution at 940 cm(-1), which is absent in the 4T/LT and 6T/LT INS spectra, also constitutes a fingerprint of the HT phases. Finally, the calculated dispersion curves of the two polymorph phases of 4T and 6T are given.

Local observation and spectroscopy of optical modes in an active photonic-crystal microcavity.

We report the direct, room-temperature, near-field mapping and spectroscopy of the optical modes of a photonic-crystal microcavity containing quantum wells. We use a near-field optical probe to reveal the imprint of the cavity mode structure on the quantum-well emission. Furthermore, near-field spectroscopy allows us to demonstrate the strong spatial and spectral dependence of the coupling between the sources and the microcavity. This knowledge will be essential in devising future nanophotonic devices.

Far- and mid-infrared of crystalline 2,2'-bithiophene: ab initio analysis and comparison with infrared response.

Infrared intramolecular vibrations and lattice modes in the crystalline phase of 2,2'-bithiophene (2T) are investigated using the direct method combined with density functional theory (DFT)-based total energy calculations. For the first time, the far- and mid-infrared responses have been calculated from the Gamma-point modes and the Born effective charge tensors of the 2T crystalline phase. The relative good agreement between the calculated and experimental infrared spectra allows us to assign the origin of the main features of the experimental spectra, which is of particular interest in the far-infrared domain. These assignments are useful for understanding all the properties of the 2T crystalline phase in which phonon-phonon and electron-phonon interactions play an important role.

Influence of speed variation and age on ground reaction forces and stride parameters of children's normal gait.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of both age and speed on ground reaction forces and temporal parameters during normal gait in children. Fifteen children aged 4-6 years (group 1), 16 aged 6-8 years (group 2), and 16 aged 8-10 years (group 3) walked at 2.7 km/h, 3.6 km/h, and 4.5 km/h on a treadmill. For each child thirty successive steps were recorded. The influence of speed and age on normalized gait parameters was examined with two-way analysis of variance. The first vertical peak force (Fz1) and all the antero-posterior forces of group 1 were higher than those of the other groups for the three speeds. The minimum vertical force (Fz2), the second vertical peak force (Fz3), and the duration of stride and stance were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3. For all the groups, Fz1 and all the antero-posterior forces increased with the speed while Fz2, stride, stance, and double-stance duration decreased. Fz3 was not influenced by speed variation. The results of this study show that age and walking speed influence ground reaction forces and stride time parameters in 4- to 10-year-old children.

Near-field photonic forces.

A review of recent advancements in photonic forces is presented. We discuss in detail the interaction of light and sub-wavelength particles on a substrate illuminated by total internal reflection, and we study the optical forces experienced by the particles. The effects of plasmon-mode excitations on the resulting photonic forces on metallic particles are also addressed. Moreover, we explore the possibility of using the metallic tip of a classical apertureless microscope to create optical tweezers, and thus to achieve a selective manipulation of nanoparticles.

[Influence of speed variation and age on the intrasubject variability of ground reaction forces and spatiotemporal parameters of children's normal gait].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of age and speed on the variability of ground reaction forces (GRF) and stride parameters of gait in normal children. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Forty-seven children aged 4-10 years were split into three age groups. Each child walked at three constant speeds on a treadmill. Thirty consecutive steps of each leg were recorded. For each child, the mean parameters of the 30 steps were calculated. The mean parameter of each child was taken to calculate the mean parameters of the group. The variability was evaluated by the coefficient of variation (CV). The influence of both age and speed on the variability was examined with a to-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: The cross effect of age and speed on the variability was not significant. The variability of the parameters decreased significantly with age between 4 and 8 years. The variability of vertical forces increased significantly with speed (between 2.7 and 4.5 km/h), while the variability of antero-posterior forces, the stride and the stance decreased between 2.7 and 3.6 km/h. However, the variability of double stance was not influenced by walking speed between 2.7 and 4.5 km/h. Except the time of production of the vertical force of propulsion (Tz3), the variability of temporal vertical parameters decreased significantly with speed between 2.7 and 4.5 km/h and the variability of temporal antero-posterior parameters decreased significantly between 2.7 and 3.6 km/h. DISCUSSION-CONCLUSION: The variability of the GRF and spatio-temporal parameters in children was influenced by age between 4 and 8 years old and by speed between 2.7 and 3.6 km/h. Moreover, the effect of age on the GRF persists up to 8 years. The variabilities of the time of production of the antero-posterior force of propulsion (Ty2) and stance duration were lower than the variabilities of the others parameters. These two variables could be the most reliable parameters when assessing gait in children aged 4-10 years, walking at speeds between 2.7 and 4.5 km/h.

The effects of exercise and protein-energy supplements on body composition and muscle function in frail elderly individuals: a long-term controlled randomised study.

Fighting against inactivity and inadequate nutritional intake are of utmost importance in the elderly. To our knowledge, the few studies which have been performed were conducted for only a short period and the results do not permit formal conclusions to be drawn. We therefore tried to fill this gap in our knowledge by determining whether an intervention combining an acceptable progressive exercise programme and nutritional supplements would be feasible for a long-term period in the very frail elderly, and would bring about concomitant benefits in body composition and muscle power. Accordingly, this exercise and nutritional combination was assessed in the frail elderly in a 9-month randomised trial with a factorial design. Fifty-seven elderly volunteers over 72 years, from sixteen retirement homes in Lyon, France participated in the study. Dietary supplements were compared with placebo, and physical exercise was compared with memory training. Main outcome measures were fat-free mass (FFM) and muscle power. FFM was determined by labelled water, and muscle power was measured by a leg-extensor machine. At 9 months, the compliance was 63 % for exercise sessions, and 54 % for nutritional supplements. In patients with dietary supplements, muscle power increased by 57 % at 3 months (P=0.03), and showed only a tendency at 9 months; although FFM increased by 2.7 % at 9 months, the difference was not significant (P=0.10). Exercise did not improve muscle power at 9 months, but improved functional tests (five-time-chair rise, P=0.01). BMI increased with supplements (+3.65 %), but decreased with placebo (-0.5 %) at 9 months (P=0.007). A long-term combined intervention is feasible in frail elderly individuals with a good rate of compliance. Nutritional supplements and exercise may improve muscle function. Despite no significant results on FFM, due to the limited number of volunteers, combined intervention should be suggested to counteract muscle weakness in the frail elderly.

Kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of propylthiouracil based on its inhibitory effect on the reduction of neutral red by hypophosphite.

A new kinetic-spectrophotometric method for determination of propylthiouracil (PTU) is described. The proposed method is simple, rapid, inexpensive and sensitive for the determination of PTU in pure and tablet forms. This method is based on the inhibitory effect of propylthiouracil on the palladium(II)-catalyzed reaction between neutral red and hypophosphite ions. The effect of various parameters such as: dye, hypophosphite, and Pd(II) concentrations, pH, ionic strength, and temperature were optimized. Two distinct linear calibration graphs were observed in the ranges 0.006-0.033 (n = 6, r = 0.9991) and 0.033-0.300 ppm (n = 10, r = 0.9980). The variable time method was used. The limit of detection was 0.004 ppm. The proposed method was applied for the determination of propylthiouracil in pure and tablet forms.

[Relation between physical activity, muscle function and IGF-1, testosterone and DHEAS concentrations in the elderly].

OBJECTIVE: Lower amounts of circulating anabolic hormones are thought to accelerate the age related decline in muscle mass and function. Replacement therapies are promising interventions but there are problems with these therapies. Thus alternative strategies should be developed. The age related changes in hormonal status may be probably influenced by exercise. The purpose of this study was: a) to confirm with other methods, more adapted for elderly people, the results of a previous study that has shown relationship between physical activity (PA) and quadriceps muscle function with dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS), insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Quadriceps muscle power (Pmax) is measured in this new work with a recently developed leg extensor machine and, b) to complete the results of the first study examining simultaneously the relationship between PA, Pmax and cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) with DHEAS, IGF-1 and testosterone in a group of healthy elderly people. METHODS: Fifty independent, community dwelling elderly subjects (25 mens and 25 womens) aged from 66 to 84 volunteered to participate in the study. PA was evaluated by the questionnaire and expressed using two activity indices: mean habitual daily energy expenditure (MHDEE) and the daily energy expenditure corresponding to leisure time sports activities (Sports Activity). Pmax and optimal shortening velocity (vopt) were measured on a Ergopower dynamometer. The Pmax was expressed relative to body mass, Pmax/kg (W kg-1), and relative to the mass of the two quadriceps muscles, Pmax/Quadr (W.kgQuadr-1). VO2max has been measured during a maximal treadmill exercise. RESULTS: In women, IGF-1 correlated significantly with MHDEE (r = 0.54, P = 0.004), Pmax/kg (r = 0.54, P = 0.004) and Pmax/Quadr (r = 0.46, P = 0.02), whereas DHEAS with MHDEE (r = 0.54, P = 0.004), Sports Activity (r = 0.65, P < 0.001), VO2max (r = 0.46, P = 0.02), Pmax/kg (r = 0.46, P = 0.02) and Pmax/Quadr (r = 0.55, P = 0.004). No such correlation was found in men. CONCLUSION: These findings confirm that in healthy elderly women physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and quadriceps muscle function are similarly related to levels of circulating DHEAS and IGF-1 suggesting a favourable influence of exercise on anabolic hormonal production in the elderly.

Leg strength and stiffness as ability factors in 100 m sprint running.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of leg strength and stiffness relative to i) 100 m sprint performance, ii) mean speed on the three phases of the 100 m race (30-60-100 m) and iii) the speed differences between these phases. METHODS: Nineteen regional to national level male sprinters competed in a 100 m race. Video analysis was used to determine mean velocity parameters. Two subgroups were created since some of the runners decreased their velocity during the third phase (G1), whereas others maintained or accelerated it (G2). Leg strength (concentric half-squats - counter movement jump) and stiffness (hopping) were determined. Simple (r) and multiple regressions (R) were used. RESULTS: The mean performance over 100 m was 11.43 sec (10.72-12.87 sec). The concentric half-squats were related to 100 m (r=0.74, p<0.001) and to the mean speed of each phase (R=0.75, p<0.01). The counter movement jump was related to 100 m (r=0.57, p<0.05) and was the predictor of the first phase (r=0.66, p<0.01). The hopping test was the predictor of the two last phases (R=0.66, p<0.05). Athletes who had the greatest leg stiffness (G1) produced the highest acceleration between the first and the second phases, and presented a deceleration between the second and the third ones. CONCLUSIONS: The concentric half-squats test was the best predictor in the 100 m sprint. Leg stiffness plays a major role in the second phase.

Force/velocity and power/velocity relationships in squat exercise.

The purpose of this study was to describe the force/velocity and power/velocity relationships obtained during squat exercise. The maximal force (F0) was extrapolated from the force/velocity relationship and compared to the isometric force directly measured with the aid of a force platform placed under the subject's feet. Fifteen international downhill skiers [mean (SD) age 22.4 (2.6) years, height 178 (6.34) cm and body mass 81.3 (7.70) kg] performed maximal dynamic and isometric squat exercises on a guided barbell. The dynamic squats were performed with masses ranging from 60 to 180 kg, which were placed on the shoulders. The force produced during the squat exercise was linearly related to the velocity in each subject (r2 = 0.83-0.98, P < 0.05-0.0001). The extrapolated F0 was 23% higher than the measured isometric force (P < 0.001), and the two measurements were not correlated. This may be attributed to the position of the subject, since the isometric force was obtained at a constant angle (90 degrees of knee flexion), whereas the dynamic forces were measured through a range of movements (from 90 degrees to 180 degrees). The power/velocity relationship was parabolic in shape for each subject (r2 = 0.94-0.99, P < 0.01-0.0001). However, the curve obtained exhibited only an ascending part. The highest power was produced against the lightest load (i.e., 60 kg). The maximal power (Wmax) and optimal velocity were never reached. The failure to observe the descending part of the power/velocity curve may be attributed to the upper limitation of the velocities studied. Nevertheless, the extrapolation of Wmax from the power/velocity equation showed that it would be reached for a load close to body mass, or even under unloaded conditions.

Quadriceps muscle function in relation to habitual physical activity and VO2max in men and women aged more than 65 years.

The relationship of quadriceps maximal muscle power (Pmax), corresponding optimal shortening velocity (v(opt)), and relative fatigability (Pmax%D) to maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and habitual physical activity (PA) was examined in healthy community-dwelling subjects (29 women and 25 men) aged more than 65 years old. PA was evaluated by a questionnaire and expressed using two activity indices: mean habitual daily energy expenditure (MHDEE) and the daily energy expenditure corresponding to leisure time sports activities (Sports Activity). In women, Pmax correlated positively with VO2max (r = .56) and with Sports Activity (rho = .41). Both Sports Activity and Pmax were significant independent predictors of VO2max and accounted for 62% of variance in VO2max. In men, v(opt) was significantly negatively related to MHDEE (r = -.59) and to Sports Activity (rho = -.40). Neither in women nor in men was Pmax%D correlated with VO2max or PA indices. The different relationship of Pmax and v(opt) with VO2max and PA indices suggests that habitual PA may be sufficient in active older women, but not in men, to positively influence quadriceps muscle function. These gender differences may suggest different approaches in exercise programming for elderly women and men.

Kinetic-spectrophotometric determination of sulfide by its reaction with resazurin.

A sensitive, rapid and selective method for the determination of sulfide based on its reaction with resazurin at pH 7 is described. The method is simple and has the great advantage of being free from interference of other sulfur anions and thus sulfide can be easily determined at trace levels in the presence of other sulfur compounds. The method has been applied to some synthetic samples and a spring water sample. The importance of sulfide compounds in biological processes has been widely demonstrated [1]. However, most of the methods used so far are either not sensitive enough or require complicated and expensive instruments; or are subjected to interferences from other sulfur compounds. Therefore, more sensitive, simple and selective methods are still required.

Zinc, cadmium, and mercury complexes of 5,7-dimethyl-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (dmtp). Preparation, spectroscopic characterization, and biological activity. X-ray crystal structures of [Zn(dmtp)2Br2], [Hg(dmtp)2Cl2], and [Hdmtp]2[CdBr4]. 2H2O.

The preparation and spectroscopic characterization of a series of dmtp complexes of Zn, Cd, and Hg, where dmtp is 5,7-dimethyl[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine, is reported. Crystal structure analyses of [Zn(dmtp)2Br2] and [Hg(dmtp)2Cl2] reveal distorted tetrahedral geometries about the central atoms and the dmtp ligands to coordinate via the N(3) atom exclusively. In the X-ray structure of [Hdmtp]2[CdBr4].2H2O, the [Hdmtp]+ cation is protonated at the N(3) atom, there being no significant interaction between Hdmtp and cadmium. A study of the antimicrobial activity of the complexes shows that the [Cd(dmtp)X2(OH2)] (X = Cl, Br) compounds display activity against two strains.
