Intracranial and spinal multiple meningioma appearing after an interval of 22 years.

Multiple meningioma is a rare condition which usually occurs in one compartment of the neuraxis. Multiple meningiomas in different neuraxial compartments are an even rarer condition with only a few cases reported in the literature. We describe a case of a 72-year-old woman who developed a parietal meningioma and 22 years later a spinal meningioma. Both tumours were successfully removed.

Posttraumatic meningioma.

This report concerns three patients with intracranial meningioma developing at the site of an old head injury with skull fracture. These cases, along with literature reports, suggest a causal relationship between head trauma and the subsequent development of meningioma.

Sex chromosome aneuploidy and anthropometry: a new proportionality assessment using the phantom stratagem.

Reported anthropometric data on 121 subjects with 47,XYY,47XXY,47,XXX, and 45,X aneuploidies were compared to those from 578 male and female control subjects by use of a single, unisex reference person ("phantom"). Subjects and controls were geometrically scaled to a standard stature of 170.18 cm, thus eliminating variance due to height. Deviations of anthropometric variables from specified phantom values were expressed as standard z-scores. By comparing z-scores of individual aneuploidy classes with those of their controls, further differences in proportionality came to light. The stratagem disclosed a systematic proportionality pattern between subjects and controls which appeared to be related to each specific sex chromosome aneuploidy. The phantom stratagem for proportional growth assessment appears to merit further use in genetic investigations where individual differences in size and shape confound the analysis of anthropometric data.

[Tritium- and carbon-14-contents of wines of different vintage from the northern and southern hemisphere (author's transl)].

The carbon-14 and tritium radioactivity contents of up to 19 vintages of German and South African wines were compared. A similar large dependence of the 14C- and of the 3H-activity in the German wine on the nuclear weapon tests of the years 1962/63 was found out. The radioactivity level is also 1977/78 still essential higher than before 1950. The South African wines have been influenced considerably smaller by nuclear explosions. The highest 3H-values were found in the vintage 1963 of the German wine with 5910 pCi/litre and in the vintage 1964 of the South African wine with 510 pCi/litre.

Necrotising enterocolitis and neuraminidase-producing bacteria.

In 9 out of 26 newborns with necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) exposure of the Thomsen-cryptantigen (T-antigen), probably due to the action of circulating bacterial neuraminidase, was demonstrated on red blood cells. The serological titres seemed to correlate with the clinical course of the disease. Neuraminidase-producing clostridia were isolated in two of the patients. Reaction between the exposed T-antigen and anti-T-agglutinins, normally present in human blood, may lead to difficulties during blood transfusion. This potential transfusion hazard is best avoided by routine T-antigen-tests and by transfusion of packed or washed red blood cells to T-antigen-positive patients.

[Investigations on the development of volatile substances during lipoxygenase-linolic-acid-reaction (author's transl)].

During incubation of soja-lipoxygenase with linolic acid, volatile compounds are formed the development of which can be seen in two possible ways:from preformed linolic-acid-hydroperoxides splitproducts arise or volatile substances of different chemical nature are built depending on the reaction conditions like temperature, O2-pressue, partner-concentration etc. By trials with hydroperoxyde-decomposing enzymes (peroxidase) and by means of radio-active labelled linolic-acid-hydroperoxides the pathways mentioned above were investigated. The results indicate that the volatile compounds are built from by-products; n-hexanal was formed from these by-products as well as from decomposed hydroperoxide. The previously proposed reaction-scheme has this been ascertained by experimental means.

[Analysis of volatile aldehydes by radio-gaschromatography (author's transl)].

Soya- and oats-lipoxygenase (E.C. 1.13.1.13.) are incubated by 14C-marked linoleic acid. The volatile aldehydes arising thereby are isolated. The activity of the components separated by gaschromatography is written down by a printing indicator and the impulses/min are registered and printed out by a ratemeter. Thus the aldehydes which are produced by the enzymatic oxydation with lipoxygenase from the molecule of the linoleic acid can be determined. The composition of the mixture of aldehyde is calculated in mol-% from the measured impulses per peak. A possible origin of pathway is indicated for the main reaction products hexanal (soya-lipoxygenase) and non-trans-2-enal (oats-lipoxygenase).

[About the formation of volatile products during lipoxigenase-linoleic-acid reaction (author's transl)].

Soya-lipoxigenase (E.C. 1.13.1.13) is incubated by linoleic acid at room temperature; the arising volatile products are isolated by different methods, concentrated, and investigated by means of gas chromatography. If the non-volatile hydroperoxides, formed during the incubation are also injected, 15-20% are decomposed to volatile products superposing the primarily enzymatically formed volatile components as artefacts and consequently falsifying the result. Without separating the linoleic acid hydroperoxides (LHPO) the quantitative proportion Hexanal/Decadienal is approximately in accordance with the proportion 13-linoleic acid hydroperoxide/9-linoleic acid hydroperoxide (this means for soya-lipoxigenase and pH 7 about 1:1). After separating the linoleic acid hydroperoxides only these volatile products are found which are arising during the lipoxigenase reaction. These are 1-2% in relation to the LHPO. In this case, the quantitative ratio Hexanal/Decadienal is not corresponding to the 13-/9-linoleic acid hydroperoxide proportion. Nearly the only product formed by this process is Hexanal.
