[Findings for validity of Dresden cephalometric (by Hasund)].

Cephalometric analysis is essential in order to evaluate treatment results. 202 patients were investigated for the validity of the norm values according to Hasund. In order to test the validity of the growth prediction methods of Björk and Petrovic 23 class II div. 1 and 21 class III patients were analysed before and after treatment and the treatment results achieved compared with the growth prediction values. The results of the norm value tests showed that the population in Saxonia is more retrognath than that in the northern region of Germany (Hasund norm group). The study also showed that the Björk growth prediction and the Petrovic growth categories were not specific enough and it is therefore suggested that separate growth prediction methods should be used in class II div. 1 and class III groups.

Adolescent

[Teleroentgenographic findings in adults with overbite. Teleroentgenographic morphology in closed-bite patients].

Lateral skull radiographs were analyzed in twenty patients with retroclined incisors. Greatest deviations from the comparison values were found in the region of the lower face. The mandible shows a retrognathic and counter clockwise rotated position. The height of the anterior lower face height and the dentoalveolar height are reduced. The interincisor angle ist distinct increased. Etiological aspects and the therapeutical consequences of the findings are mentioned.

Adult

[A computerized database for problem patients in pediatric anesthesia].

A computerized database for use in pediatric anesthesia and in the perioperative care of patients with malformation syndromes and rare diseases is presented. A total of 2200 syndromes are listed, and the database contains helpful data, experience, guidelines and literature references relevant to about 500 rare diseases. The access to the databank, its structure and the probable benefits of the system are explained and discussed.

Anesthesiology

Impact of a privacy panel on the behavior of caged female rhesus monkeys living in pairs.

Thirty paired female rhesus monkeys were tested in a control situation when companions had no privacy, and in an experimental situation when they were offered the option to move behind a panel and be alone. Paired partners spent significantly more time in close proximity (same half of the cage) when the privacy panel was provided (means with panel = 76.0%/h vs. means no panel = 60.8%/h; p less than 0.005). At the same time, they were more engaged in affiliative interactions (means with panel = 37.4%/h vs. means no panel = 26.5%/h; p less than 0.025) while the incidence of agonistic interactions tended to decrease (means with panel = 0.3/h vs. means no panel = 2.2/h; p less than 0.1). It was concluded that rhesus monkeys have a need for companionship. They prefer to stay in close proximity with a compatible partner even though this may reduce their available cage space. It was further concluded that companions have no need for prolonged periods of visual seclusion, but occasional privacy is beneficial for their relationship.

[Computer-assisted teleradiographic image interpretation in orthodontics].

The utilization of a computer supported cephalometric system using the analysis introduced by Hasund is demonstrated. In comparison to the traditional measurement by hand the advantages of a computerized analysis are: Time reduction, minimization of evaluation errors, the use of individualized norm values and the advantages in recording.

Cephalometry

Limiting factors of functional adaptation to orthodontic space closure.

The closure of spaces, especially in the incisor region, has been criticized as causing functional alterations in the masticatory system. The study comprised 80 patients, 30 with space closure and 50 as a control. The results showed that closure of incisor spaces caused marked occlusal alterations, but apparently no damage to the temporo-mandibular joint nor to muscle action, provided that treatment was completed before the age of 12 years.

Anodontia

[Ten years of quality control in the microscopic detection of acid-fast bacilli].

The results of proficiency tests in screening for acid-fast bacteria are reported. Out of 52 participating laboratories, the results obtained by 47 of them could be evaluated. Thanks to this current check of quality and annual evaluation, erroneous results were detected, their cause could be determined and measures to secure reliability of the examinations were taken.

Bacteria

[The open bite--morphology and therapeutic consequences].

With cephalometric measurements we investigated the morphology of the malocclusion "Open bite" from adults. The main of abnormality is the divergence of the jaw bases and the compensatory growth of alveolar bone in vertical direction. Under consideration of the best time for beginning of the treatment we give advice for the etiologically orientated therapy.

Adult

[Computer supported tele-X-ray diagnostics in maxillary orthodontics].

Radiographic cephalometric measurements are very important for the orthodontic diagnosis. For the computerized analysis 10 percent of time is necessary comparable with the volume of time for the analysis by hand. For the computerized analysis were used the following hardware: AC 7100, Digitizer K 6405, Printer K 6314. After input of 19 skeletal points with the digitizer the results will printed as a hardcopy. The cephalometric method was adapted by the method after Hasund. The software was written in Turbo-Pascal. The computerized cephalometric analysis is a part of our computerized orthodontic analysis programme.

Cephalometry

Renal pelvic pressures during extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy.

Renal pelvic pressures were studied in 4 patients with indwelling nephrostomy tubes undergoing extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL). The pressures were monitored by attaching the patients' nephrostomy tubes to an electrical pressure transducer. Three of these patients had ureteral stents placed to prevent outflow obstruction from disintegrated stone fragments. The mean pelvic pressure increased from 17.0 cm H2O at the start to 52 cm H2O at the conclusion of ESWL. Two hours post-ESWL, the pressures declined to a mean of 27.0 cm H2O. The maximum pelvic urine volume as determined by aspirating the nephrostomy tubes at the conclusion of the procedure was 6 cc. The observed rise in pelvic pressure may be explained by a sustained contraction of the pelvic smooth musculature.

Humans

Prompted progression order in a troop of captive rhesus monkeys.

It is a routine practice to subject captive groups of primates to single-file movement; yet no records on the sequences of such progressions have been published. The present study analyzes the progression sequence during prompted single-file movement for the purpose of routine weighing in a captive troop of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). The animals had to overcome fear before leaving their home pen; nonetheless, they left in a well-defined, stable sequence. An individual's position in this progression order as well as the consistency with which it retained its place were dependent on its age but not on its dominance status. It was suggested that the monkeys gradually learned with age to master their fear with the prospect of quickly returning to their home pen.
