Deletion of the short arm of chromosome 20.

A de novo deletion of the short arm of chromosome 20--del (20) (p11) or (p11p13)--is described in a child with psychomotor retardation and multiple congenital anomalies.

Ulnar ray a/hypoplasia: evidence for a developmental field defect on the basis of genetic heterogeneity. Report of three Brazilian families.

We report on five Brazilian patients from three unrelated families with congenital anomalies of the upper limbs. Ulnar aplasia/hypoplasia was the main reason for examining these patients. Evidence for existence of an ulnar developmental field is based on genetic heterogeneity. Clinical and genetic aspects of the ulnar ray defects are discussed.

A previously undescribed autosomal recessive multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation (MCA/MR) syndrome with fronto-nasal dysostosis, cleft lip/palate, limb hypoplasia, and postaxial poly-syndactyly: acro-fronto-facio-nasal dysostosis syndrome.

We describe two sibs born to a consanguineous couple. Among other clinical findings both have mental retardation, short stature, facial and skeletal abnormalities characterized by hypertelorism, broad notched nasal tip, cleft lip/palate, campto-brachy-poly-syndactyly, fibular hypoplasia, and marked anomalies of foot structures. Facial signs of the reported patients resemble those present in the fronto-nasal "dysplasia" syndrome; however, the whole clinical picture in the present patients suggests a true MCA/MR syndrome, most likely inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Clinical and genetic aspects of the present family are discussed.

Brief clinical report: duplication of distal 17q: report of an observation.

We describe a boy with the syndrome due to dup(17q) resulting from a paternal balanced t(12;17) (q24;q23). The comparison of the clinical findings in our patient with those previously reported shows that the dup(17q23----qter) is associated with a clinically recognizable syndrome. Anomalies present in greater than or equal to 75% of the patients were severe psychomotor retardation; short stature; microcephaly; frontal bossing and temporal retraction; widow's peak; narrow palpebral fissures; flat nasal bridge; thin upper lip overlapping thin lower lip; downturned corners of the mouth; apparently low-set, posteriorly angulated and malformed ears; low posterior hairline; widely spaced nipples; cryptorchidism; proximal limb shortness; and hyperlaxity of limb joints. The translocation carrier father of our patient had a Poland anomaly.

Late infantile autosomal recessive myotonia, mental retardation, and skeletal abnormalities: a new autosomal recessive syndrome.

Four sibs of non-consanguineous parents who had myotonia from late infancy are described. Mild to moderate mental retardation, severe bone abnormalities of the vertebral column (mainly in the thoracolumbar region), and short stature were also observed. Autosomal recessive inheritance is demonstrated. These cases are compared with reported cases of the Schwartz-Jampel syndrome.

Autosomal dominant late adult spinal muscular atrophy, type Finkel.

We describe clinical and genetic data from the study of two families with 80 members affected with the autosomal dominant, slowly progressive spinal muscular atrophy of late onset (average 48.8 years), first described by Finkel in 1962. Electromyography and muscle biopsy of a number of patients confirmed the neurogenic nature of the conditions. Unusual findings in this disorder were cramps, spontaneous fits of suffocation, and symptomatic myotonia. Other manifestations are slow loss of muscle strength and progressive proximal atrophy, which starts in the lower limbs and progresses to the upper limbs; hypoactive or absent tendinous reflexes; and generalized fasciculations. Sensory and cranial nerve function is unimpaired. Probabilities for genetic counseling are evaluated by means of a method adequate to the late-onset nature of the condition.

Atrichia, abnormal EEG, epilepsy and mental retardation in two sisters.

Two daughters of a nonconsanguineous couple are described. Both present mental retardation, epileptic seizures, congenital atrichia, histologically anomalous skin and abnormal EEG pattern. From a discussion of the literature on atrichia, the forms without involvement of teeth, nails and hidrosis, among which recessive inheritance prevails, are distinguished from each other. None of them coincide with the syndrome described here.
