[Assessment of the nutritional intake of the adult population of Geneva based on individual quantitative questionnaires].

This paper presents the variation in dietary intake, according to sex and age, observed among a representative sample of the over-19-years old residents of Canton Geneva (Switzerland). 576 men and 384 women have been interviewed by 2 specially trained dietitians using a dietary history questionnaire (7.9% of the total population). Differences between sexes are essentially a matter of quantities: in grams or kilocalories, men eat more of all nutriments than women. The energetic intake of the males exceeds by 600 kcal the one of the females. This difference is partly due to a mean alcoholic intake of 44 g for the men and 13.7 g for the women. But the percent of each nutriment in the energetic intake, without alcohol, is the same in both sexes, i.e. 15 +/- 2% of proteins, 40 +/- 6% of lipids and 45 +/- 7% of glucids. The same phenomenon can be seen in Oriental Flandras, in Liège or in Calvados. Age is an important factor influencing all types of nutrient intakes. Our data show that when men or women get older, the percentage of lipids and protids in the energetic intake tends to decrease while the percentage of glucids increases. The total lipid intake decreases with age but the polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acid ration remains constant with age. This observation could be associated with a change in dietary habits of the elderly, a difference of diet from one generation to the other, or the result of a mortality excess among individuals that had an hyperlipidic diet.

[Triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness. A random sample, Geneva 1972].

Subscapular and triceps skinfold thickness were measured by using a Lange skinfold caliper, on a random sample of 2861 boys and 2692 girls aged 4 to 191/2 years. The technique of measurement is specified, and the data are submitted to statistical analysis with a view to standardization. For both skinfolds, the sample size, the arithmetic mean and the standard deviation in each age group and either sex are given in tabular form. Correspondingly, fitted percentiles are shown on separate graphs for both of these skinfolds, related to age as well at to standing height of boys or girls.

[Peak expiratory flow rate among Swiss boys and girls between 4 to 19 1/2 years of age domiciled in the Canton of Geneva in 1972].

Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured by means of a Wright peak flow meter on a sample of 2865 boys and 2712 girls selected at random in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland (resident population of Swiss children and adolescents aged 4-19 1/2 in 1972). Technique of measurements and statistical analysis are described with an aim at standardization. Expected percentiles of PEFR (50, 25, 10 and 2.5) versus standing height are presented in tabular form for boys and girls separately. Nomograms are given allowing graphical determination of expected PEFR percentiles in either sex for any given standing height.

[Standardization of the peak expiratory flow rate].

Five successive measurements of the peak expiratory flow rate have been made on a large number of children and adolescents in various age groups and both sexes. The predominant part of the increase in individual performance is already achieved during the first three trials. Besides, the maximum value of the five measurements apparently does not differ essentially from the mean value of the two or three highest measurements.

[Current standards for body height and weight of Swiss children and adolescents 4 to 19 1/2 years old (Geneva 1972)].

New tables have recently been published containing (1) the usual percentiles of body weight and stature in each of the successive 6 months age groups, (2) two different age independent estimates of weight percentiles related to height, and (3) 50%, 80%, and 95% contours for the bivariate joint distribution of height and weight in each age group. All of the tables and charts are given for boys and girls separately. In view of the randomness of the sampling and the characteristic heterogeneity of the population concerned, these new normal limits may be declared valid not only for the entire Swiss area, but even for adjacent regions.

[Sociological aspects of sports activities in adolescents].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiological, psychosocial and sociological aspects influencing the practice of physical activity of young people. Of approximately 1800 17 to 18 years old boys and girls going to an official school in Geneva, 600 were chosen at random. Unskilled workers could not be included into the study. 443 subjects could be contacted and interviewed in spring 1973 through a codified questionnaire. A first evaluation of the answers focused on the influences of sex, social status, type of sport practised, as well as the ideological integration. The results correlated well with current empiric experiences or with most of the hypothesis on which the questionnaire was based.
