Simian crease incidence and the correlation with thenar and hypothenar pattern types in Swedish patients with trisomy 21 (Down's syndrome).

In the present study the frequency of the simian crease among 57 Down patients is compared to the corresponding figures of related and unrelated individuals. A study of the correlation with the dermatoglyphic patterns of the thenar and hypothenar areas is presented, the palm print classification being carried out according to a Swedish method.

Digital dermatoglyphics of Turner's syndrome.

The proposition that finger print variability between individuals might be reduced by the absence of an X-chromosome in Turner's syndrome was rejected. In the present study of 58 XO patients, aged 15-50 years, relatives of several cases, unrelated female control samples and three unrelated male samples were investigated. The higher mean value of the TRC among patients supported the hypothesis forwarded by Penrose that an added X- or Y-chromosome reduces the TRC and a missing one increasing it. The figures do not speak against the hypothesis that genes affecting the TRC are located on the X-chromosome. A summary of the major dermatoglyphic investigations in Turner's syndrome is presented.

Significant variations of fingertip dermatoglyphics in trisomy 21, Down's syndrome.

In this study a new method for description of fingerprints was used on plain ulnar loops of Down's syndrome individuals of both sexes. The results of the patients were compared with those of their parents, siblings and unrelated control samples, all of the matching sex. Higher variability within the dermatoglyphics was seen among patients. The results were supported by higher correlation figures between the parameters studied in the control samples. The TRC showed no difference between Down's syndrome individuals and controls. Several causes for the results are discussed. Investigations by other authors are presented.
