Demonstrating oxygen loss and associated structural reorganization in the lithium battery cathode Li[Ni0.2Li0.2Mn0.6]O2.

The cathode in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries operates by conventional intercalation; Li+ is extracted from LiCoO2 on charging accompanied by oxidation of Co3+ to Co4+; the process is reversed on discharge. In contrast, Li+ may be extracted from Mn4+-based solids, e.g., Li2MnO3, without oxidation of Mn4+. A mechanism involving simultaneous Li and O removal is often proposed. Here, we demonstrate directly, by in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), that O2 is evolved from such Mn4+ -containing compounds, Li[Ni(0.2)Li(0.2)Mn(0.6)]O2, on charging and using powder neutron diffraction show that O loss from the surface is accompanied by diffusion of transition metal ions from surface to bulk where they occupy vacancies created by Li removal. The composition of the compound moves toward MO(2). Understanding such unconventional Li extraction is important because Li-Mn-Ni-O compounds, irrespective of whether they contain Co, can, after O loss, store 200 mAhg(-1) of charge compared with 140 mAhg(-1) for LiCoO(2).

Nanotubes with the TiO2-B structure.

Here we report the first synthesis of TiO2-B nanotubes by a simple hydrothermal route; lithium may be intercalated up to a composition of Li(0.98)TiO2 compared with Li(0.91)TiO2 for the corresponding nanowires.

Rubidium doped zeolite rho: structure and microwave conductivity of a metallic zeolite.

Large crystallites of high purity zeolite rho were synthesized by controlled monitoring of the aging and heating period of the mother gel. The microwave conductivity of Rb-rho doped with up to 20 Rb atoms per unit cell was measured over the temperature range 15-300 K, and the structures of three of the samples were examined through Rietveld analysis of powder neutron diffraction data. At low concentrations of rubidium dopant the observed microwave responses were dominated by polarization effects. In the sample Rb(17)/Rb-rho a strongly temperature-dependent electronic contribution to the conductivity was observed above approximately =150 K. In Rb(20)/Rb-rho, conductivities in the range 1.5-2.3 Sm(-1) were observed between 15 and 300 K. This residual conductivity at 15 K, unprecedented in a zeolite, indicates that the sample is indeed metallic; however, the values of conductivity measured are low in comparison to conventional metals and comparable to those of doped semiconductors. The evolution of the conducting behaviour is discussed in relation both to observed structural and to possible electronic changes occurring within the samples on metal doping.
