[Ultrastructural and experimental study of the ocular toxicity of antibiotics and antifungals on the corneal endothelium (author's transl)].

The authors report an experimental study on the ocular toxicity of some antibiotics (ampicillin, gentamicin, cephalotin sodic, tobramycin) and some antifungals (amphotericin B, flucytosin). For this study they used both the transmission electron microscope and the scanning microscope. The most important modifications of the corneal endothelium were observed with amphotericin b, flucytosin. cephalotin sodic. The toxicity seems to be lower with gentamicin and with tobramycin. Ampicillin produced few visible changes. This study was realized with the aim to determine the quantities of antimicrobials that could be injected in the human eye without corneal lesions in the treatment of endophthalmitis (bacterial or fungal).

Animals

Pulmonary mucormycosis (Phycomycetes) successfully treated by resection.

Pulmonary mucormycosis (Phycomycetes) is an uncommon fungus infection complicating diabetes mellitus, leukemia, lymphoma, and other debilitating diseases. A review of the literature revealed that of 21 diabetic patients in whom Phycomycetes occurred without underlying malignancy, only 7 survived. These 7 underwent operation. This report concerns another patient with pulmonary mucormycosis who was successfully treated by pulmonary resection.

Diabetes Complications

Problem areas and mental and behavioral status in schizophrenia, neurosis, and depression.

A 5- to 8-year follow-up of first admissions to a local psychiatric service enabled the comparison of patients with and without symptoms for the presence of current problem areas. Whereas first admission was associated with a temporary high level of reports of problems, the 6-month and 5- to 8-year levels were stable. Relative risk of onset following an event compared with spontaneous onset was likewise stable for the different diagnoses, significant only for depressive states and not for schizophrenia or neurosis, despite higher overall reporting of problems in the latter. The type of depression emerging after problems was similar to that occurring spontaneously.

Adult

[Visual complications of mitral leaflet prolapse (author's transl)].

Among ten patients with acute ischemic cerebral accident and mitral leaflet prolapse, two women presented with visual disturbances consistent with embolism in the ophthalmic or posterior cerebral circulation. These observations emphasize the importance of thorough cardiovascular assessment in all patients with acute cerebral or ocular ischemia, and we suggest that echocardiography should be part of routine investigation of such patients.

Adult

[Ultrastructural aspect of the different levels of the lacrimal system (author's transl)].

Using the transmission electron microscope and the scanning electron microscope, we have found a different ultrastructure at the different levels of the lacrimal system: 1) tarsal conjonctiva: numerous microvilli on a relief of small valleys; 2) lacrimal punctum: the surface of the cell is flat with sparse microvillosti, sparse cilia and strong intercellular junction; 3) external part of the canaliculus: pavement epithelium with numerous microvillositi and pinocytosis, absence of cilia; 4) internal part of the canaliculus: the microvillositi are very small or absent; 5) lacrimal sac: the cilia are arranged by tufts scattered on this malpighian epithelium; 6) nasolacrimal duct: the cilia are numerous; 7) in the nose the cilia are extremely numerous.
