Inhibition of the degranulation and myeloperoxidase activity of human polymorphonuclear neutrophils by Brucella melitensis.

The degranulation and myeloperoxidase-H2O2-halide activities of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes from healthy donors were tested after co-incubation with either Brucella melitensis 16M, Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus aureus in presence of lipopolysaccharide, protein fraction, native hapten and soluble fractions released at 65 degrees C from smooth strain of Brucella melitensis 16M. The degranulation and myeloperoxidase activities of polymorphonuclear leukocytes were significantly higher when co-incubated with Staphylococcus aureus than with Brucella melitensis. The presence of lipopolysaccharide, protein fraction, and native hapten did not cause significant modification of either degranulation or myeloperoxidase activities of polymorphonuclear leukocytes against Staphylococcus aureus. Soluble fraction released at 65 degrees C produced a significant reduction in the myeloperoxidase activity but did not alter the degranulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes triggered by Staphylococcus aureus.

[Use of a rapid method for detecting adenovirus in the feces of children].

Adenovirus (ADV) and rotavirus (RV) were screened by latex aglutination (LA) in 772 fecal samples from hospitalized and non hospitalized children under 7 years of age, those included 55 control samples. Reactive samples were confirmed by electron microscopy (ME) and enzimoimmunoassay (EIA). ADV were found in 20 (2.6%) samples and RV in 25 (3.2%). Coinfection by both viruses was not demonstrated. The greatest percentage of findings was observed in watery (23% ADV and 25% RV) and almost watery stools (8% ADV and 25% RV). We did not find any of those viruses in samples from control children. Concordance between LA and confirmation methods used was excellent. Thus the LA tests could provide a simple tool for the diagnosis of non hospitalized patients, increasing the possibilities of a rapid ethiological diagnostic in infectious diarrhoeas.

[Age and sex distribution of sexually transmitted diseases in Valladolid. A study of 5076 cases].

The age and sex distribution of 5,076 cases of S.T.D. dealt with between 1982 and 1988 at the Dermatological Dispensary of the Territorial Social Welfare Service in Valladolid are studied. The maximum frequency of S.T.D. (24.1% of cases) corresponded to the age group between 21 and 25 years, which was also the period for maximum prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (26.3%), Gardnerella vaginalis (30.7%), Candida albicans (27.4%) and acuminata condyloma (33.4%). Syphilis (19.9%), Chlamydia trachomatis (27%), Ureaplasma urealyticum (24.6%), Mycoplasma hominis (25.0%), Trichomonas vaginalis (23.0%) and genital herpes had maximum prevalence in the group between 26 and 30 years. Women were affected at younger ages than males. 16.9% of women with some S.T.D. were between 16 and 20 years of age, while only 6.5% of males with S.T.D. were in this age-group (p less than 0.001).

[The role of C reactive protein in urological neoplasms].

The authors make a study of 46 urological patients (16 control and 30 neoplasia persons) determining the R.C.P. before and after the operations. The positive results obtained (77%) should lead to the said test becoming routine in uro-genital neoplasias.

[A form of bladder allergy: eosynophilic cystitis].

Eosynophile cystitis is the serious result of an antigen-antibody reaction in the bladder. The rarity with which it occurs, its ambiguous clinical picture and its solely anatomo-pathological diagnosis combine to make it atypical and hence the scanty numbers of papers published on the subject. The author presents a case of his own, following a bibliographic review in which special emphasis is placed on the etiopathogeny of the process.
