Influence of exercise on serum levels of myoglobin measured by radioimmunoassay.

To determine the influence of exercise on serum levels of myoglobin, serum levels of this protein were determined by RIA in 90 healthy men, divided as follows: (1) Basal control (no exercise) 25 cases; (2) Moderate exercise (after subject had been working for 12 h in Medicine Emergency Service) 19 cases, and (3) Intensive exercise: (a) football professional (45-min match) 10 cases; (b) football amateur (45-min match) 10 cases; (c) basketball professional (45-min match) 10 cases, and (d) basketball professional (90-min training) 16 cases. Our results led us to the following conclusions. (1) Moderate exercise, such as the usual daily work, does not modify myoglobin levels; (2) Myoglobin serum levels after exercise increase in nearly all individuals. They are higher in untrained people; (3) There seems to be a correlation between exercise intensity and increase of myoglobin serum levels, and (4) The detection of serum myoglobin by RIA may have a wide field of application for sport medicine.

[Serum tissue polypeptide antigen in the differential diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis and exocrine pancreatic tumors. Preliminary results].

The authors give the preliminary results about the determination of the tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) in chronic pancreatitis and pancreas exocrine tumors, indicating that although it can make a differential diagnosis between the two diseases, it is of no practical value because of the frequent increase of TPA in several non tumoral processes that may or may not accompany pancreatic tumors.

[Essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia and hepatitis B virus (author's transl)].

Essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia is a nosological entity described by Meltzer and Franklin in 1966 and characterized by asthenia, arthralgias, purpura, glomerulonephritis and mixed IgM-IgG cryoglobulinaemia. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers were studied in the sera and cryoprecipitates of 6 patients with the syndrome. Five (83,3%) had at least one HBV marker and three (50%) had HBsAg either in the serum or in the cryoprecipitate. HBV therefore seems to be involved in the pathogenesis of essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia in a large number of cases.

Simultaneous plasma determination of CEA, HCG-beta and beta-2-microglobulin in patients with nontrophoblastic tumors.

With the object of studying the possible usefulness of the simultaneous plasma determination of CEA, HCG-beta and beta 2-microglobulin in patients with nontrophoblastic tumors, we measured by radioimmunoassay the concentrations of these substances in 77 patients with normal renal function. In the group without metastases (32 cases), the percentages of positives we low and similar for the 3 tumor markers. In the group with metastases (45 cases), the X2 test of independence between each of the 2 markers at a level of 95 % showed a relationship between the results obtained in the determination of HCG-beta and beta 2-microglobulin, as an independence between CEA and HCG-beta results and CEA and beta 2-microglobulin results. These data suggest the utility of determining CEA with only 1 of the other 2 antigens in disseminated tumors.
