A caching approach for XML based medical data.

This paper discusses the representation and caching of medical data structured and stored as XML documents. Caching of XML medical data is proposed towards improving the medical data accessibility and availability. The representation of XML medical data is a tree like structure and the caching process is guided by frequency of access of the XML medical data records. Experimentation is carried out for an artificial workload of patient records and both cache and byte hit ratios are evaluated. The proposed caching scheme is proven to be quite effective and beneficial for accessing the medical data.

Communication technologies and applications in a medical environment.

As we move into the next millennium, we anticipate a rapid introduction of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into the medical environment. In applying these technologies in Health Care Environments, the basic goals are to improve: (a) the collaboration between the different partners in the health sector, (b) the access to care and (c) the medical education, and to enhance overall quality (by increasing the availability of some applications, improve the quality of others and facilitate some completely new ones), and all these at affordable cost. This requires close interaction between health care practitioners and information technologists to ensure that the proposed technologies satisfy current user's needs, and anticipate future. The public awareness and the acceptance of the new medical environments by the users are key factors for successful implementations.

Communication technologies in health care environments.

A successful implementation of hierarchical health care networks is dependent on a number of different technical and non technical factors. This paper investigates how the networking technologies, both 'traditional' and broadband, can support the communication requirements of medical environments. The general purpose is to implement communication infrastructures and services, which will improve the collaboration between the different partners in the health sector in offering better healthcare services at affordable costs.
