Multiple logistic regression was used on serological data collected in the context of the Sardinian African swine fever (ASF) eradication program from pig farms in the province of Nuoro, Sardinia. The monthly percentage of ASFV-positive herds decreased significantly from October 1994 through March 1996 (P < 0.001). The farm-level risk of seropositivity to African swine fever virus (ASFV) was higher in free-range farms than in partial-confinement farms (odds ratios (OR) varied between 4.9 in October 1994, and 5.7 in March 1996, P < 0.001). The risk of infection for total-confinement farms was one-fifth of the risk for partial-confinement farms in October 1994 (OR = 0.2, P < 0.001), whereas in March 1996, the estimated OR was 0.57 and not significant (upper confidence limit = 1.1). The maintenance of ASFV in Sardinia was primarily associated with free-range pig farms. The natural logarithm of the number of pigs tested per visit in a farm was positively associated with the risk of herd seropositivity (OR = 2.6, P < 0.001).

Our purpose was to assess the relationship of obesity and body fat distribution to serum glucose values, insulin concentration and insulin resistance in obese prepubertal boys. Thirteen obese and 15 control prepubertal boys were studied. Biceps, triceps, subscapular and suprailiac skin fold thicknesses were measured. Percentage of body fat and total body fat were calculated. Body fat distribution was assessed by analyzing the central (supra-iliac, subscapular)/peripheral (biceps, triceps) ratios. During an oral glucose tolerance test, serum glucose and insulin were measured and insulin/glucose was calculated. Body fat data and body fat distribution indices were significantly higher in the obese group. The obese population presented significantly elevated values of insulin and insulin/glucose. In the obese group insulin showed significant correlations with percentage of body fat, total body fat and subscapular skin fold thickness, whereas insulin/glucose had significant positive correlations with percentage of body fat, total body fat and supra-iliac skin fold thickness. In obese boys significant positive correlations were also shown by subscapular/supra-iliac with insulin and insulin/glucose, and by subscapular/triceps with insulin. In prepubertal boys obesity is centripetal and an upper central body fat distribution seems to be first associated with an abnormal glucose-insulin homeostasis.

The effect of dl-alpha-tocopheryl (vitamin E) succinate in modifying the radiation response of mouse neuroblastoma (NBP2) and mouse fibroblast (L-cells) cells in culture was studied on the criterion of growth inhibition (due to cell death and inhibition of cell division). Results show that vitamin E succinate markedly enhanced the effect of 60CO-gamma-irradiation on NB cells, but it did not significantly modify the effect of irradiation on mouse fibroblasts. Sodium succinate plus ethanol (0.25% final concentration) did not modify the radiation response of NB cells or fibroblasts. Butylated hydroxyanisole, a lipid soluble antioxidant, also enhanced the effect of irradiation on NB cells, indicating that the effect of vitamin E in modifying the radiation response may be mediated, in part, by antioxidation mechanisms.
Association of histocompatibility antigen (HLA antigens) with collagen diseases is not a casual event. Even known data, the practical conclusions have a limited usefullness because there is not a definitive correspondence between HLA antigens and rheumatic diseases. With HLA typing is possible to determine risk populations. The pauciarticular type II of juvenile reumatoid arthritis (J.R.A) is associated with HLA-B27 in the 75% of cases. Also, this antigen is associated with ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's disease, Behçet disease, psoriasic arthritis, reactive arthritis (yersinia, shigella, salmonella). Systemic lupus erythematosus has been described associated with HLA-B8 and HLA-DRw2.
The most outstanding aspects of congenital or fetal syphilis, emphasizing its epidemiology, clinical aspects, diagnosis, prevention and treatment, are studied. The authors point out the increasing frequency of this treponematosis, which should still be considered as a worldwide endemic disease, though it is foreseeable and tractable. Some new data about the problem are provided, apropos of recent observations.
A study has been performed on the arterial pressure (AP) in a population of healthy children aged 3-14. The study sample was formed by 837 subjects (394 boys and 443 girls) belonging to a middle, middle-low class level according to Graffar methods. Systolic and diastolic arterial pressure data (IV Korotkoff noise) in lie down position, sitting and standing, are obtained and related for both sexes with age, weight and height. Systolic and diastolic AP increased with weight and height in both sexes, specially in children above 6, and in all 3 positions. These values were respectively higher in standing position, being lowest in lie down position. We conclude with the interest of obtaining our own data given the already known influence of geographic, climatic as socioeconomic factors on arterial pressure values.
The Hallevorden-Spatz disease should be suspected in children or young people with motor, pyramidal or extrapyramidal symptomatology and deterioration of superior functions specially upon the existence of family history. Pathognomonic diagnosis may only be obtained by necropsy but magnetic resonance images, although not pathognomic, are sufficiently characteristics to strongly support the diagnosis. Four cases of Hallevorden-Spatz disease are presented with special emphasis on the MR images characteristic of this disease.
