Development and persistence of kindled seizures after repeated injections of pentylenetetrazol in rats and guinea pigs.

Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) was injected into rats (30 or 35 mg/kg) and guinea pigs (40 or 45 mg/kg) daily or every second day. A progressive development of seizure activity after this treatment was observed. Doses ineffective after the first injection induced tonic seizures after 20 injections. Both kinds of treated animals immediately developed tonic seizures when PTZ was injected after a few months interruption for one time only. The results support the assumption that seizures induced by chronic injection of PTZ are similar to kindled seizures evoked by daily electrical stimulation and can be regarded as a model of epileptogenesis.

Influence of lithium chloride on rabbit's EEG and behavior.

The effects of intravenous or intrahippocampal injections of lithium chloride dissolved in bidistilled water were investigated on rabbits with chronically implanted canniulas and electrodes. Bioelectric activity of the limbic structures and behavior were analyzed. Electrical activity was recorded by means of bipolar electrodes implanted chronically in the dorsal hippocampus, the gyrus cinguli, the amygdaloid complex and the medial hypothalamus, LiCl inhibited electric activity of the limbic structures and caused a reduction of spontaneous motor and exploratory activity of rabbits.

Medial hypothalamic nuclei in the macaque (Macaca mulatta) brain.

The term 'medial hypothalamus' is used here for the region situated between the anterior hypothalamus and mamillary body (without the lateral hypothalamic area). The paper is based on a series from the macaque brain in three principal planes and stained by the Weigert-Wolters, Klüver-Barrera, Nissl, and Schultze methods. The following parts have been differentiated in the medial hypothalamus: the ventromedial, dorsomedial, dorsal, dorsocaudal, and infundibular nuclei.

The effect of intrahippocampal administration of dopamine or apomorphine on EEG of limbic structures in the rabbit brain.

The effect of intrahippocampal injections of dopamine or apomorphine on the energy level of EEG from limbic structures in the rabbit was investigated. The EEG was recorded from gyrus cinguli anterior, hippocampus dorsalis, nucleus amygdalae, hypothalamus medialis, and nucleus caudatus. Both apomorphine and dopamine in doses used produced stimulatory effects. The effect of apomorphine did not appear after pretreatment with haloperidol (2 or 24 hr, 1 mg/kg sc). This suggests the presence of dopamine receptors of stimulatory type in the dorsal part of rabbit hippocampus. The data confirm the prolonged action of haloperidol.
