Intracranial aneurysm formation following radiotherapy.

Two patients sustained a subarachnoid haemorrhage secondary to radiation-induced vasculopathy and associated aneurysm. A 65-year-old woman was treated by radiotherapy for a stereotactically biopsied left parieto-temporal astrocytoma. Three-and-a-half years later, she suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage secondary to a giant aneurysm arising from the middle cerebral artery bifurcation. A 44-year-old man sustained a subarachnoid haemorrhage 21 years after receiving whole brain irradiation for a large left parietal angioma. Angiography following his subarachnoid haemorrhage revealed a distal right middle cerebral artery aneurysm that was not visible on earlier angiograms. Both patients underwent craniotomy for their aneurysms with good postoperative recoveries.

Subependymoma of the thoracic cord: potential pitfalls in diagnosis.

Subependymomas are rare tumours, usually intracranial, which have a distinctive histological appearance and a relatively benign nature. A symptomatic case of a thoracic spinal intramedullary tumour is presented. Complete removal with neurological recovery was achieved. Increased awareness of this lesion is desirable. Histological examination of small tumour specimens may result in an erroneous tissue diagnosis of astrocytoma and inadequate treatment.

Action of 1,10-phenanthroline transition metal chelates and their constituents on the rat isolated diaphragm preparation.

The actions of two related series of fully co-ordinated, divalent 1,10-phenanthroline transition metal chelates have been investigated on the rat isolated diaphragm muscle-phrenic nerve preparation and, where possible, compared with those of their constituent metal ions and ligands. Each member of both series of chelates produced blockade of neuromuscular transmission, although mechanistically not of a uniform type, and several elicited varying degrees of muscle contracture. The kinetic reactivity of the metal chelate appeared to be an important factor determining the nature of the biological response and profound differences in response were observed between labile and inert chelates differing in some cases by only one electron in the 3d shell.
