[Comparative evaluation of health hazards associated with industrial chemicals and their derivates forming during water chlorination].

Many industrial chemicals found in waste waters are able to form organochlorine by-products during water disinfection. The transformation of seven model compounds, cyclohexene, n-butanol, diphenylmethane, acetophenone, aniline, 1-methylnaphthalene, and phenylxylylethane during a reaction with active chlorine was studied. Aqueous chlorine and sodium hypochlorite were used as chlorinating agents. The products of the reaction were analyzed by means of chromatomass-spectrometry. A schematic model of diphenylmethane transformation was proposed. Comparative evaluation of hazards associated with the model chemicals and their derivates confirmed that chlorination products can be more toxic and dangerous than the initial compounds, and may possess mutagenic and cancerigenic properties.

Cyclization of ortho-cyclopropylphenyl benzamides in gas and liquid phases.

The electron ionization (EI) and collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectra of substituted N-(ortho-cyclopropylphenyl)benzamides 1-7 and N-[ortho-(1-methylcyclopropyl)phenyl]benzamides 8-12 were recorded. In addition to routine bond cleavages, the molecular ions (M+) of 1-12 undergo cyclization into the corresponding 3-aryl-1-alkyl-1-ethyl-1H-benzoxazines and isomeric 5-ethyl-2-oxodibenzoazepines. The presence of a methyl group in the cyclopropyl ring (compounds 8-12) makes the formation of 5-ethyl-2-oxodibenzoazepine less favorable. In accord with mass spectrometric predictions, compound 13 (3-p-tolyl-1-ethyl-1H-benzoxazine) was obtained as a major product of the reaction of N-(ortho-cyclopropylphenyl)-4-methylbenzamide 1 with sulfuric acid. Traces of 5-ethyl-2-oxodibenzoazepine were also detected in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the reaction mixture although the yield was too low to allow its isolation.

Fragmentation of 3,7-dialkyl-1,5-diphenyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3. 1]nonan-9-ones under electron ionization.

A series of 3,7-dialkyl-1,5-diphenyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3. 1]nonan-9-ones was prepared, and the details of their fragmentation under electron ionization (EI) were elucidated. The molecular ions of each compound under consideration were quite abundant in their EI spectra. Full-scan spectra exhibited a number of fragment ions which were clearly assigned using MS/MS and accurate mass measurements. The basic fragmentation of 3,7-dialkyl-1,5-diphenylbispidinones was due to the cleavage of C(1)-C(2) bond followed by a hydrogen migration similar to an odd-electron McLafferty rearrangement. Alternatively, the C(1)-C(2) bond cleavage was followed by the elimination of an imine molecule, Alk-N=CH(2). Further fragmentation resulted in ions at m/z 234 and 103, present in the spectra of all the compounds under study. The fragmentation pathways proposed in this paper are based on the substituent shifts, accurate mass measurements and collision-induced dissociation spectra of selected ions. The results of the present work can be useful in selecting the fragment ions suitable for identification and quantitation of bispidinones in biological matrices.

The contamination of birds with organic pollutants in the Lake Baikal region.

Lake Baikal is considered to be the largest reservoir of fresh natural water in the world. Nevertheless industrial enterprises on its banks as well as river effluents contaminate this unique basin. In the present study birds' eggs (15 species) collected in the Baikal region (Selenga river estuary) have been analysed. Quantitative determination of more than 40 individual organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, organochlorine compounds) has been carried out using GC-MS as an analytical tool. The results obtained demonstrated a wide range of toxicant concentrations (2-3 orders of magnitude) for various species. Very high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been detected in the eggs of Anas platyrynchos (mallard), Tringa stagnatilis (marsh sandpiper) and Podiceps auritus (slavonian grebe). These particular species also have the highest levels of other toxicants. Taking into account high rate of metabolism of certain of these compounds in birds, it has been proposed that the major route of transfer into higher trophic levels is via water and aquatic invertebrates.

[Formation of organochlorine compounds in the chlorination of water containing industrial contaminants: Experimental assessment and forecasting].

The hazard of GSS production from commercial chemicals was evaluated during water chlorination by analyzing the results of experimental study of chlorination of chemicals from different classes. Structural fragments were found, their presence in the molecule determined the capacity of a substance to undergo intensive transformation to form GSS. The regularities that associates the structure of a substance with the rate of chlorination were detected. Some theoretical approaches to the determination of the ability of chemical to chlorinate are outlined.

[Cyclohexane transformation during water chlorination].

Cyclohexane transformation was studied during water chlorination. Three mechanisms of cyclohexane transformation in the presence of chlorine were determined. Over 70 reaction products were identified. Five of them have mutagenic activity.
