[Vaginosonographic measurement of the postmenopausal endometrium in the early detection of endometrial cancer].

Vaginosonographic measurements of the endometrium were performed in 155 postmenopausal women without abnormal gynecological findings and free of any clinical symptoms. An endometrial thickness of greater than or equal to 4 mm was clarified histologically by means of a curettage. We found endometrial carcinomas in seven cases, cervical carcinomas in one, endometrial polyps in ten and glandular-cystic hyperplasia in three cases. One patient showed an atrophic endometrium associated with a submucous myoma. In total, endometrial carcinomas were detected by sonography in 4.5% of our patients. On the basis of our preliminary results, we conclude that vaginosonographic examination of the endometrium is a highly sensitive (81%) and specific (89%) method, with good acceptance by the patients, in the detection of asymptomatic benign and malignant neoplasms of the postmenopausal woman.

[Serum level of the tumor marker CA 125 before second-look laparatomy in primary epithelial ovarian cancer in relation to intraoperative findings].

Serum CA 125 levels were evaluated in 76 patients undergoing second-look laparatomy for primary epithelial ovarian cancer. The findings were related to the presence of intraabdominal tumor. CA 125 levels were greater than 35 U/ml in 26 cases in accordance to the intraoperative findings. CA 125 levels less than or equal to 35 U/ml were found in 50 cases out of which 29 were free of tumor, while 21 showed intraabdominal tumors. Thus a CA 125 level greater than 35 U/ml revealed to be a strong predictor of the presence of intraabdominal tumor. Due to low sensitivity monitoring serum CA 125 levels cannot replace second-look laparotomy.

[Results and experiences with several methods for the immunodiagnosis of amebiasis].

Results and experiences of some immunodiagnostic methods for amebiasis. Experiences concerning the laboratory diagnosis of invasive amebiasis are described and discussed. Technics used include the Passive Hemagglutination Test with E. histolytica antigen (Behring FRG) and sheep erythrocytes as carrier and the Indirect Fluorescence Antibody Reaction (IFAR) with corpuscular antigen prepared from cultures of E. histolytica strain HK 9. Comparatively for a part infected hamster liver (Dr. Richle strain) has been used as antigen. We conclude that IFAR with HK 9 antigen is more sensitive than the other tests. It has been proved useful in the diagnosis of extraintestinal amebiasis (antibody titer greater than or equal to 1:160).

Phage and host genetic determinants of the specific anticodon loop cleavages in bacteriophage T4-infected Escherichia coli CTr5X.

Anticodon loop cleavages of two host tRNA species occur in bacteriophage T4-infected Escherichia coli CTr5X, a host strain restricting phage mutants deficient in polynucleotide kinase (pnk) or RNA ligase (rli). The cleavage products accumulate with the mutants but are further processed in wt infection through polynucleotide kinase and RNA ligase reactions. Inactivating mutations in stp suppress pnk- or rli- mutations in E. coli CTr5X and, as shown here, also abolish the anticodon nuclease, implicating the stp product with this activity. We show also that there exist other suppressing mutations of a pnk- (pseT2) mutation that appear not to affect the anticodon nuclease and are not in stp. It has been shown that a single locus in E. coli CTr5X, termed prr, determines the restriction of pnk- or rli- mutants. A transductant carrying prr featured upon infection the anticodon nuclease reaction products, suggesting that prr determines the specific manifestation of this activity. However, prr does not encode the tRNA species that are vulnerable to the anticodon nuclease.

[Quantitative demonstration of helminth stages in municipal waste water].

Quantitative estimation of helminth stages in municipal waste waters. A method for the quantitative estimation of helminths eggs in municipal waste waters is described. The method is based on a modified flotation pattern combining both more accurate determination of the percentage of eggs and minimal microscopic examination. The percentage of recovery was found to increase proportionally to the egg content of the sample. Therefore, the methodological error does not represent a constant. For getting comparable data on the contents of helminth eggs, the median or the geometrical mean should be calculated instead of the arithmetical mean usually applied.

[Solitary neurofibroma of the lumbosacral plexus. Case report].

The article describes a case of a solitary neurofibroma of the plexus lumbosacralis causing pain and incomplete leg paresis. Complete relief was obtained by total extirpation of the tumour, a procedure which must be regarded as the method of choice. Pain and pareses in the lower extremities require differential diagnostic consideration of rare neurogenic tumours of the peripheral nervous system in the regions of the pelvis and plexus lumbosacralis. Neurological examination by a specialist is of significant importance preoperatively to determine the seat of the tumour and to assess the postoperative course.

[The behavior of hemodynamic parameters during surgery in childhood].

Mechanical cardiographic analyses of the circulation were carried out intraoperatively and directly after the operation on 130 children of 11/12 to 15 2/12 years of age. Essential haematodynamic changes are represented by a rise in the cardiac rate, decline of stroke volume, changes in cardiac work and output, and in speed of contraction compared with initial preoperative values. Triggering factors are discussed. A healthy normal circulatory system will tolerate these reversible disturbances. Decompensation may occur in children with a primary decline in cardiac output.

[Effect of food deprivation on acid-base and blood-gas parameters].

The changes of the acid-base- and blood-gas parameters were continuously measured during a two-day food abstinence (but fluid intake free of calories) by means of the blood-gas-automaton ABL 1 with the help of 20 test persons. The denutrition causes a decrease of the metabolic components and of the pCO2, but not of the blood-pH and pO2. The decrease of the concentrations of BE (about 2 mmol/l) as well as HCO3 and TCO2 (in each case 2-3 mmol/l) caused by abstain from food are no indication for a therapy.

[Differential hemodynamically oriented therapy in the early hospital phase of acute myocardial infarction].

100 patients with acute myocardial infarction were examined by means of catheterization of the pulmonary artery, dilution of isotopes and phonoelectrocardiography immediately after admission to the clinic and under a therapy following haemodynamic viewpoints within 2-24 hours after the beginning of the treatment, taking into consideration 15 parameters. According to a classification of the behaviour of the coronary circulation into normal function, hypovolaemia, hyperfunction, compensated insufficiency of the left heart, forward failure, retrofailure and cardiogenic shock the differential-therapeutic approach is described and the effects are explained. The haemodynamic examinations render possible the recognition of beginning circulatory complications still before their clinical manifestation, they result in founded therapeutic methods which are aimed at the correction of incorrect parameters which affect the O2-balance of the myocardium and thus the protection of the myocardium as well as the stability of the circulation, they allow a prognostic assessment of the course of the infarction and are suited to reduce the mortality of acute myocardial infarction in the early hospital phase by early recognition of developing pumping disturbances and their early treatment.

Reservoir function of the stratum corneum: development of an in vivo method to quantitatively determine the stratum corneum reservoir for topically applied substances.

Investigations on the stratum corneum (SC) reservoir for topically applied substances are of importance in dermatologic science in order to assess the pharmacokinetics of these substances. In the present study, an in vivo method was developed to determine the SC reservoir quantitatively and to investigate the temporal behavior of this reservoir. Therefore, increasing amounts of an oil-in-water emulsion (o/w emulsion) containing 4% of a chemical UV filter were topically applied onto the flexor forearms of 5 healthy volunteers. The saturation of the SC reservoir was determined utilizing the tape stripping technique 1 and 6 h after application. The capacity of the SC reservoir for the o/w emulsion was found to be approximately 2.7 mg/cm(2). Furthermore, a correlation of the capacity of the SC with transepidermal water loss was observed. Extending the time between the topical application and SC removal did not affect the distribution or the recovery rate of the UV filter in the SC. The results indicate that the reservoir of the SC is limited. This is reflected by the saturation level, which depends on the individual volunteer and, presumably, the topically applied substances and formulations used. The results show that the method developed is suited to quantitatively determine in vivo the SC reservoir for topically applied substances.
