Menière's disease. II. A neuropsychological study.

23 Menière patients were examined with a extensive battery of neuro-psychological tests. In a previous investigation, the authors had demonstrated that patients with long-duration Menière's disease had psychological disturbances, presumably localized in the nondominant hemisphere. In the present investigation, the patients had short-duration Menière's disease, and we were unable to replicate the results of the former investigation. It is concluded that the central changes in nondominant hemisphere function develop over a long period of time. It is hoped for that further neuropsychological investigations of Menière patients will give more information on what is primary in Menière's disease: peripheral, sensory or central neurological changes.

Levodopa treatment of presenile dementia.

In Parkinson's disease as well as presenile dementia there is a dopamine deficit in the basal ganglia. Extrapyramidal symptoms are common in presenile dementia, and dementia is a common trait in Parkinsonism. It is reasonable to suggest a partial common etiology and pathophysiology, and the logical consequence is an investigation of levodopa substitution is presenile dementia. Until now very few reports of such studies have been published. The investigations have been uncontrolled or carried out on small or inhomogeneous materials. This investigation is triple-blind, clinically controlled, and the material is very homogenous. After 6 months' levodopa treatment no significant effect is shown either on a broad spectrum of psychiatric items or in cognitive functioning. This negative result is discussed. The probability of a specific Parkinson dementia is mentioned and the significance of the modifying effect of an imbalance in other transmitter systems is emphasized.

Trisomy 8 syndrome. A psychological and somatic study of a mentally non-retarded male with 46,XY/47,XY,+8 chromosome constitution.

A 27-year-old, non-retarded male with trisomy 8 mosaicism (46,XY/47,XY,+8) had a short head, a short broad-bridged nose, a protruding upper lip, pterygium colli, moderate kypho-scoliosis, camptodactyly of all fingers and deep furrowing on the soles. Radiographic examination of columna showed spina bifida of L1 and fusion of L5 and S1. These findings are characteristic for the trisomy 8 syndrome. A psychological study showed a personality characterized by immaturity and lack of spontaneity and self-confidence. An intelligence test (WAIS) placed him within the normal range, but presented an uneven development of the cognitive functions with special difficulties in synthetic abilities and visual scanning. His auditive span was rather low, and his memory functions were somewhat below average.

Concurrence of turner's syndrome and anorexia nervosa.

The ninth known case of the concurrence of anorexia nervosa and Turner's syndrome is presented. The question whether the presence of Turner's syndrome represents a greater risk for a patient to develop anorexia nervosa is considered.

Meniere's disease. A neuropsychological study.

A neuro-psychological study is described comprising 19 patients with Meniere's Disease who were participating in an experimental lithium therapy programme. The patients evidenced an organic dysfunction which is not entirely periphearl. The interpretation of the results are not incompatible with an attempt to reconcile neuro-psychological and psycho-somatic viewpoints regarding etiological aspects of Meniere's Disease. An evaluation of the lithium effect was performed.
