The extended free scapular flap.

The free scapular flap, supplied by a single circumflex scapular vascular pedicle, can be safely extended beyond the midline of the back. The upper back can be a donor for very large and long flaps, ideal for resurfacing large defects.

The free vascularized anterior rib graft.

The free vascularized anterior rib graft, one of the earliest free osseous transfers to the head and neck, has not gained widespread acceptance, perhaps due to early reservations concerning the adequacy of the periosteal circulation. The authors present further laboratory evidence, with clinical cases, attesting to the adequacy of the periosteal circulation alone. Our surgical technique varies from other reports in that a substantially greater length of the internal mammary vessels is harvested and includes the dual periosteal supply by means of the supracostal and intercostal vessels, both branches of the internal mammary vessels. This modification is based on anatomic and angiographic findings. The incorporation of both branches enhances the margin of safety in raising this free bone graft.

[Anatomical variations and taxonomic relatedness in Hominoidea].

31 anatomical variations were examined in 125 Pan paniscus and 96 Gorilla gorilla beringei skulls. Comparisons with published data of Hominoidea show that differences in their frequencies are proportional and parallel to taxonomic relationships on the subspecific, specific and generic level.

33,000-yr old chert mining site and related Homo in the Egyptian Nile Valley.

The Nazlet Khater 4 site (Nile Valley, Upper Egypt) is located on one of the small wadi- interfluves in the lower desert near the steep cliffs bordering the western Nile Valley edge (Fig. 1). We have previously reported the excavation of an early Upper Palaeolithic blade industry at this site, although blade industries in the Nile Valley had only been known to occur since 18,000 yr ago. The 1982 excavation reported here confirms that Nazlet Khater 4 is a chert mining site with a complex extraction strategy, going back 33,000 yr. A nearby grave contained a skeleton of a man in the extended position. We show that the cranial morphology is anatomically modern with archaic characteristics such as a very robust mandible. There is evidence that the skeleton has a similar age to that of the mining site.
