AIMS: To examine the survival of a group of women with stage IB invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix, divided according to the expression of tumour associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE). METHODS: Histological material from 81 women with stage IB squamous and adenosquamous cervical carcinomas before radiotherapy was assessed for the extent of tissue stromal eosinophilia, quantified using antibodies to human major basic protein. RESULTS: Twenty eight (38%) of the cases demonstrated TATE of over 30 eosinophils/mm2, with 12 (16%) having greater than 100 eosinophils/mm2. Eleven women in the series developed distant spread or recurrent pelvic disease, this group having a stromal eosinophil density significantly less (13.8/mm2) than the remainder (69.9/mm2) (p = 0.03). The actuarial five year survival rate for women with a tumour eosinophil density over 30/mm2 was 92% compared with 70% with a density under 30 mm2, with a significant difference in the survival curves for these two groups (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: As a univariate parameter, a tumour associated tissue eosinophilia of at least modest proportions is associated with statistically improved survival in women with stage IB cervical carcinomas.
"The present paper develops a generalization of the standard discrete-time competing hazards model that allows for the types of stochastic dependencies resulting from shared unmeasured risk factors. An empirical example is provided using the process by which young women form their first conjugal residential union, with married and unmarried cohabitation representing the competing alternatives. The results suggest considerable and significant similarity of the alternatives in terms of the unmeasurables. It is also shown that, as a result, the independence assumption leads to substantially biased estimates of the net marriage and net cohabitation survival functions." The data concern a cohort of white children born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1961 and their mothers, followed up to 1985.
This paper provides an in-depth portrait of the nest-leaving process in early adulthood as it emerged in the 1980s. Event histories are used to describe transitions in and out of the parental home during the years from age 15 through age 23. We focus on the role of the "new" forms of living arrangements in the leaving-home process, namely nonfamily living and cohabitation. The results show that the transition to full residential independence is more gradual, with more intermediate steps, than previous studies suggested. Cohabitation is rare as a route out of the parental home, and both nonfamily living and cohabitation lead to much higher return rates than does marriage.
The effect of audiometric configuration on the auditory brain stem response was studied in a large patient sample, and wave I latencies, wave V latencies, and the I-V interwave intervals were compared to those from a previous report. Patients with notched hearing losses showed longer wave V latencies and I-V interwave intervals than those with other audiometric configurations, but the magnitude of the effect was relatively small, and the confidence limit for cochlear diagnosis was essentially the same as that based upon a cochlear hearing loss population without regard to audiometric configuration.

Recent evidence linking premarital cohabitation to high rates of divorce poses a complex theoretical and empirical puzzle. We develop hypotheses predicting that premarital cohabitation is selective of those who are prone to divorce as well as hypotheses predicting that the experience of premarital cohabitation produces attitudes and values which increase the probability of divorce. Using multiwave panel data from a recent cohort of young men and women in the United States, we specify and test models of these predictions. The results are consistent with hypotheses suggesting that cohabitation is selective of men and women who are less committed to marriage and more approving of divorce. The results also are consistent with the conclusion that cohabiting experiences significantly increase young people's acceptance of divorce.
Intracranial activation of the facial nerve is now possible with the noninvasive techniques of magnetic stimulation. Brief magnetic pulses generated by a coil overlying the parietal scalp elicit compound muscle action potentials of similar shape and amplitude and greater latency than those produced by electroneurography. Mapping studies demonstrate the compound muscle action potentials to be of constant latency and varying amplitude with changing coil location. Maximum compound muscle action potential amplitudes are obtained with the coil center located in a rectangular area superior and posterior to the ear canal. A comparison of large and small diameter coils showed them to be equally effective for painless facial nerve stimulation; however, the smaller coil allowed for a more localized field of activation. Magnetic stimulation has the potential to provide cross-the-lesion testing of facial nerve function.

A patient with breast metastases is presented showing increased nodular renal uptake of tracer on bone scintigraphy that also demonstrated rib metastases and a large metastasis in the pelvis. However, vertebral body metastases were not shown when clearly demonstrated on CT with even partial compression on a thoracic spine film. Most of the renal lesions were hypoechoic on sonography, showed hypoattenuation areas on plain CT and after contrast enhancement but no calcification could be demonstrated. This case once again illustrates the value of scrutinizing the soft tissues on scintigraphy but also the possibility of showing some metastases on CT not visible on scintigraphy.
We hypothesize that children who are close to their parents are more likely to have attitudes and behavior that are consistent with their parents' values than children who are not close to their parents. Using data from a probability sample of 888 mother-child pairs of white women in the Detroit metropolitan area, we tested this hypothesis, using both mother's and child's attitudes toward premarital sexual intercourse and the child's report of whether he or she had engaged in premarital sexual intercourse. Unlike most previous work in this area, which has posited a direct association between the closeness of the mother-child relation and the child's attitudes and behavior, we found that the quality of the relation interacted with the mother's attitudes in its effects on the child's attitudes and behavior. Children with close relations with their mothers were more likely to hold attitudes and behave in a manner consistent with their mothers' own attitudes than children with more distant relations.
A method to use ionizing radiation to inactivate HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in human body fluids was studied in an effort to reduce the risk of accidental infection to forensic science laboratory workers. Experiments conducted indicate that an X-ray absorbed dose of 25 krad was required to completely inactivate HIV. This does not alter forensically important constituents such as enzymes and proteins in body fluids. This method of inactivation of HIV cannot be used on body fluids which will be subjected to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) typing.

"This paper details the authors' selection, design, and use of a life history calendar (LHC) to collect retrospective life course data. A sample of nine hundred [U.S.] 23-year-olds, originally interviewed in 1980, were asked about the incidence and timing of various life events in the nine years since their 15th birthday.... The following aspects of the LHC are described: (a) the concept, uses, and advantages of the LHC, (b) the time units and domains used, (c) the mode of recording the responses and the decisions and problems involved, (d) interviewer training, and (e) coding. The following results attest to the accuracy of the LHC retrospective data: (a) only four of the calendars had missing data in any month; (b) the data obtained in 1980 about current work, school attendance, marriage, and children showed a remarkable correspondence to the retrospective 1985 LHC reports of these events; (c) the interviewers were positive about the LHC's ability to increase respondent recall."
Using cohabitation and marriage histories collected in 1985 from 23-year-old women and men, this study investigates the process of union formation, considering transitions from single life into cohabitation and marriage. The outcomes of cohabitation are also considered--both the dissolution of unions and the transformation of cohabiting unions into marriage. These data indicate that large proportions of men and women experience cohabitation fairly early in the life course. At the same time, many cohabiting unions are dissolved fairly quickly and numerous others are soon transformed into marriages. Thus even though cohabitation will be experienced by many, most people will continue to spend substantially more time in marital unions than in cohabiting unions.
Avarol and avarone are two antimitotic and antimutagenic agents that preferentially inhibit proliferation of T-cell leukemia lines in vitro. This report shows that these compounds have a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the replication of the etiologic agent of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), human T-lymphotropic retrovirus (HTLV-III)/lymphadenopathy-associated virus, in human H9 cells in vitro. Both compounds show a significant cytoprotective effect on HTLV-IIIB-infected H9 cells at concentrations as low as 0.1 microgram/ml (0.3 microM). Both avarone and avarol block in a dose-dependent manner the expression of the p24 and p17 gag proteins of HTLV-III in H9 cells after virus infection and block viral replication, as judged by approximately 80% inhibition of reverse transcriptase activity. These results strongly suggest that these compounds may prove to be useful in the treatment of patients with AIDS and AIDS-related complex.
